HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Barbara Ann Luther, 82, a resident of Carthage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, formerly of Harrisville and LaFargeville, died on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse where she had been a patient since September 2nd.

Born in New York City on Aug 13, 1936, a daughter of  Earle and Florence Doyle Foster, she was graduated from Vincentian Institute in Albany, NY, in 1954.

She married Dale Burgess in 1957 at St. James Church in Albany.  Mr. Burgess died in 1961.  In 1963, she married Martin R. Luther, Sr., at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville.  Mr. Luther died on February 25, 2017.

She worked for New York State in Albany from the time she was 17 until moving to Harrisville in December, 1957.

Along with her husband, Mrs. Luther also owned and operated the Harrisville Laundromat and B & M Bookkeeping Service in Harrisville for a number of years, until she and her husband moved to Watertown in 2002, and to LaFargeville in 2005.  While residing in Harrisville, she had also supervised the Harrisville Youth Recreation Program for a number of years.

Mrs. Luther was a member of the Harrisville Rod & Gun Club, and was a member and Past President of the former American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary in Harrisville.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed traveling, playing bingo and slot machines. She particularly enjoyed the experience in her younger years, when she and her husband Marty would take in fresh-air children and developmentally challenged teens in the mid 1970’s.

Surviving are three sons, John “Jack” and wife, Sheryl Luther, Craig and wife, Terri Luther, and Martin Luther, Jr., all of Harrisville; a daughter, Laura and husband, Wendell Cornaire, of LaFargeville; five grandchildren, Travis, Kyra and Craig Luther, and Trisha and Michaela Cornaire, and two great grandchildren, Ava and Ryder Luther; a sister, Diane Powers, of Lowville, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to both of her husbands, she was predeceased by her sister, Carole Decent, who died in 2003.

Barbara’s funeral will be held on Monday, September 10, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Harrisville, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, officiating.  Burial will be in Harrisville Community Cemetery, Harrisville.
