Lowville, NY ~ Wilbur L. Stanford Sr., 87, of 7026 Peckham Rd., died unexpectedly Friday morning, March 9, 2012, at his residence after being in declining health for the last four years.

Wilbur was born on November 25, 1924, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, the son of Lewis and Emogene Young Stanford. A lifelong resident of the area he attended school in New Bremen and Copenhagen.

He married Beatrice M. Feisthamel on June 26, 1948, in St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with Rev. Hugh King, OFM, officiating.

Wilbur was a self-employed contractor in Lowville for many years retiring in 1991. He had also been in the logging business many years ago.

A World War II veteran, he was honorably discharged from the US Army after proudly serving his country during the war.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Church in Lowville. He was also a member of the Lowville Elks Lodge BPOE# 1605, Lowville American Legion Post #62, Lowville Fish and Game Club, and was a charter and lifetime member of the Lowville VFW Post 6912.

He was an active hunter and fisherman and was fortunate enough to harvest a buck this past hunting season. He was a very passionate fan of the NY Yankees and was also very fond of John Deere Equipment and still enjoyed driving his Gator and Mower.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 63 years, Beatrice, are his five children, Linda Turck, of Croghan, Wilbur (Sue) Stanford, Jr., of Glenfield, Robert F. Stanford, of Lowville, Paul (Lorrie) Stanford of Lowville, Patricia A. (Merle) Arndt, of Beaver Falls; eleven grandchildren who held a very special place in his heart, Kip (Julie) Turck and Philip (Nicole) Turck, both of New Bremen, Jennifer (Sean) Johnson and Wilbur (Erica) Stanford III, both of Beaver Falls, Travis Stanford and Michael Stanford, both of Lowville, Lindsey Stanford and fiancé, Lee Todeschini, of Brantingham, Shaun R. Stanford and fiancée, Lynn Walters, of Boonville, Kristel A. Stanford of Lowville, Mackenzie L. Demo and fiancé, William Ritz, and Kyle R. Demo, both of Croghan; fourteen great-grandchildren; an aunt, Clara Bartolley, of Lyons Falls; three step brothers, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters, Evelyn Ingersoll, Helen Simpson and Margaret Koster.

Wilbur’s funeral will be held on Monday, March 12, 2012, beginning with a 12:15 p.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 1:00 p.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2 – 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, in his memory, memorial contributions made be made to Lewis County Search and Rescue, 7782 West State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.
