Virginia Vallencour Obituary

HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Virginia  S. “Jinny” (Irish) Vallencour, 85, formerly of Harrisville, died peacefully on Friday, November 23, 2012, at The Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Carthage, where she had resided since 2010.
    
Born October 21, 1927, in Carthage, NY, the daughter of Clarence and Jennie Crowner Stevens, she was raised in Harrisville from the age of 2 years by her “Auntie” Esther Wilcox and Grandpa Crowner.  
    
Virginia was a 1944 graduate of Harrisville Central School, and in 1968 was graduated from the Watertown Manpower Program where she received her LPN degree.

She married John T. Irish on June 14, 1946, in Tupper Lake, NY.  Mr. Irish died on November 15, 1967.

On June 30, 1970, she married Fred E. Vallencour at  the United Community Church in Carthage.  Mr. Vallencour died on February 27, 2005.

In her earlier years, Virginia worked as a mother and homemaker caring for her large family.  After receiving her nursing degree, she worked as a private duty LPN at Carthage Area Hospital, and in the office of Dr. Richard Neil in Harrisville during the 1970’s.  In the 1980’s, she worked for Dr. Alvin Bregman’s oral surgeon practice in Watertown and also as an EMT for the Black River Ambulance. Additionally, for a number of years during the late 1990’s, she worked as a substitute nurse for Harrisville Central School.  

She was a long-time member of the Harrisville Christian Church, also frequently attended services at the United Methodist Church in Harrisville, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Throughout her life, “Jinny” was always very active in community and church affairs and events, and forever will be remembered for her engaging personality and wonderful sense of humor.  Of her many pastimes and interests, she liked sewing and knitting, and especially enjoyed bowling, singing in the church choir and playing the organ.


Surviving are her loving children, including her two daughters, Anne I. and (husband) Allen G. Weaver, of Boonville, and Cinda I. Alteri, of Apex, NC; her three sons, John Thomas and (wife) Katherine L. Irish, of Cary, NC, Joseph D. and (wife) Vickie Irish, of Cobleskill, NY, and Terry R. and (wife) Shelley Irish, of Shrewsbury, MA; 12 grandchildren, Erica and (husband) Kevin Maira, of Durham, NC, Dr. Kelly Weaver and (husband) Michael Jauch, of Cazenovia, NY, Chaira Alteri, of Maricopa, AZ, Jory and (wife) Lindsay Alteri, Raleigh, NC, Janna and (husband) Matthew Kanellis, of Cary, NC, Mitchell Irish and Ryan Irish, both of Fairport, NY, Andrew Irish and Austin Irish, both of Cobleskill, NY, Gregor and (wife) Kristin Irish, of Medway, MA, Callie and (husband) John Monte, of Scottsdale, AZ, and Kelsey Irish, of Shrewsbury, MA, and 5 great grandchildren, twins Sean and Christina Conley, Luka Kanellis, Cicily Alteri and Kendall Jauch.

She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Stevens, and her son-in-law, Joseph P. Alteri, who died in 2011.

Virginia’s funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 25th, at the Harrisville Christian Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Michael C. Gault, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Harrisville Community Cemetery, Harrisville.

Virginia’s family will receive friends from 12 Noon until the time of her 1:30 p.m. Service on Sunday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Harrisville Christian Church or the Harrisville Rescue Squad.
