Viola Dutton Obituary

CASTORLAND, NY ~ Viola “Vi” M. Dutton, 92, formerly of Castorland, died on January 9, 2016 in the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, NY where she had resided since April, 2015.  

Born September 21, 1923 in Croghan, a daughter of Lawrence J. and Nellie Dekin Pate (Pominville), she was a 1942 graduate of Beaver River Central School.  

She married Wesley J. Dutton on April 13, 1946 in the Rectory of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Amadeus Burke, OFM, officiating.  Mr. Dutton died August 27, 1975.

For a short time prior to her marriage, she worked for the Climax Manufacturing Company in Castorland.  After her marriage she became a full time mother and homemaker.  She also became a self-taught upholsterer who assisted her husband upholstering furniture from their home, and later continued their small business for many years following his death.

Always active in her community, Vi worked as a volunteer at the Lewis County General Hospital’s Snack Bar, and delivered mail at the hospital from 1978 until 1992.  She also worked as an Election Inspector for Lewis County, and was a 25 year member of the Lewis County Republican Committee.  

She was a life-long communicant of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, and was a former member of its Rosary Society.  She held memberships in many civic and fraternal organizations including the Lewis County General Hospital Auxiliary, Great Bend Home Bureau, Maple Twig of Croghan and Black River Valley Fiddlers.  She also served as Secretary to the Jefferson County Home Bureau for many years.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting and photography.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas W. Dutton, and Joseph M. and Mary Dutton, all of Castorland, and a daughter, Nancy J. Bellinger, of Norwalk, CA; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren; a brother, Ronald J. Pate, of Copenhagen, NY, and three sisters, Evelyn F. Turck, of Croghan, and Muriel A. Nuffer and Shirley M. Martin, both of Castorland, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, Wes, she was predeceased by a daughter, Julie Wallace, and two brothers, Earl L. and Gerald J. Pate.

Her funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2016 beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor of St. James Church in Carthage, officiating.  Spring burial and graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor of St, Stephen's Church, Croghan, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, January 13th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
