Thomas Harold Paté

CASTORLAND, NY ~ Thomas H. Paté, 78, of 6680 Old State Rd., Castorland, died peacefully on Father’s Day, June 21, 2026, at his home where he was under the care of his loving family and Lewis County Hospice.

Born in Lowville, NY, on November 14, 1947, a son of Harold M. and Mary E. Monnat Paté, he was educated in a rural school on the Old State Road and at Beaver River Central.

He married Sally A. Lehman on July 19, 1969, in the former St. Anthony’s Church in Indian River.

A Vietnam veteran, he entered the US Army on June 12, 1967, and served in Vietnam with the Trp  C ¾ Cav 25th Inf Div. He was the recipient of the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, Valorous Unit Award, and Vietnam service medal with four bronze service stars. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1969, as a Sergeant.

Tom was a farmer, sugar maker, and self-employed woodsman and lumberjack his entire life. When he wasn’t working, which was seldom, he enjoyed traveling to Idaho to see his brother Butch and hunt elk and mule deer. His other favorite pastimes included traveling to local coffee shops and visiting with family and friends. He will long be remembered as a hard-working man, for his wonderful kindness and generosity, and for his strong loyalty and integrity.

He was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church and was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan.

Surviving are his loving wife, Sally, and his six children, Tammy Snell, Tina (Thomas) Becker, James (Amy) Paté, Rebecca (Thomas) Paté-Johnson, Benjamin (Jackie) Paté and Joseph Paté; seventeen grandchildren; four sisters, Doris Dundon, Watertown, Anita (William) Smith, Colorado, Sharon Runkowski, Chittenango, and Theresa “Terre” Paté, New Bremen, and two brothers, John (Cindy) Paté, Castorland, and Wayne “Butch” Paté, Idaho.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Caitlyn Ralph Paté, who died at birth on March 19, 2014, and his son-in-law, Michael Snell, who died on May 20, 2025.

Tom’s funeral will be on Thursday, June 25, 2026, beginning with a 12:45 p.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, June 24, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, and on Thursday, June 25, from 11:00 a.m. until his 12:45 p.m. prayer service.
