Stephen D. Chartrand

CARTHAGE, NY ~ Stephen Douglas Chartrand, 62, of 23744 County Rt. 42, Carthage, formerly of Harrisville, died peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2015, at his home where he had been under the loving care of his family and Jefferson County  Hospice.

Stephen was born on September 16, 1952, in Gouverneur, NY, the son of Edward E. and Beatrice E. Cring Chartrand.  He was a 1970 graduate of Harrisville Central School and then went on to Canton ATC from where he received an Associate's Degree in Engineering in 1972. He then graduated from Syracuse University in 1974, with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering.

He married Sharon A. “Sherry” Fuller on September 25, 1976, at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, with the Rev. Eugene F. Kelly, Pastor, officiating.

Following college, he accepted a position in 1974 with Viking Snowplow in Harrisville, and retired after 39 years as the company's Manager in 2013.

He was a communicant of St. James Church in Carthage and a former parishioner of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed reading, golfing at Cedars Golf Course, cutting wood, and bowling. He was a superb bowler and participated in the Thursday Night Men’s League and Sunday Co-Ed League at Harrisville Lanes and Lounge.  He accomplished thirteen 300 games, an 800 series, and was a member of the 700 Club.  Steve was also an ardent SU basketball fan.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sherry, of 38 years; his son, Dennis J. Chartrand, of Harrisville; his father and stepmother, Edward and Myrtle Chartrand, of Carthage; two sisters, Dian and husband, Gene Mealus, of Harrisville, Marie and husband, Jim Roloson, of Interlaken, NY; two brothers, Timothy and wife Lucie Chartrand, of Kensington, CT, and Rick and wife Julie Chartrand, of Harrisville; his brother-in-law, Sherwood "Butch" MacCue, of Croghan, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother Bea, who died in 1969, his brother, Dennis Chartrand, who died in 1971, and his sister-in-law, Cynthia MacCue, who died in April, 2014.

Stephen's funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, beginning with a 9:45 AM Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in the spring in St. Francis Cemetery, Harrisville.

Calling hours will be on Monday, March 2, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
