Stephen Buckingham Obituary

Stephen A. Buckingham, 98, of Belfort Rd; Croghan, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 31, 2019 following an accident in his home.

Stephen was born September 25, 1920 in Croghan, the son of the late Wesley and Mary (Bush) Bockenheim. He attended Brewery Hill Country School. On August 28, 1948, Stephen married Winifred Roseboom at St. Joseph’s Church in Boonville. The couple owned and operated BuckRose Farm, a registered Holstein farm. Stephen had many hobbies, including logging, fishing and hunting, he enjoyed being outdoors and maple sugaring, which he did until he was 90. He was a member of the Holstein Association, Beaver River Senior Citizen’s, Three Ridge Hunting Club, St. Stephen’s Knights of Columbus Council #2175 and was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 70 years, Winifred; six children, Kay (Clint) Widrick of Croghan; Dale (Nancy) Buckingham of Lowville; Jean (John) Buckingham-Sweet of Lowville; Paula (Terris) Politi of Lake Placid; Donna (Larry) Campeau of Lowville and Diane (Joseph) Csizmar of Croghan; nine grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Stephen in predeceased by all of his siblings, Mary (Gerald) Edwards, Margaret (Karl) Kuhl, Martha (James) Campany, Louis Bockenheim, Claude Bockenheim, Claire (Stanley) Young, Dorothy Bockenheim, Anita (Edward) Yousey and Arletha Bockenheim.

Calling hours will held on Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan. Burial in the St. Stephen’s Cemetery will be held in the spring.

A GRAVESIDE COMMITTAL SERVICE FOR MR. BUCKINGHAM WILL BE HELD ON MODAY, MAY 6, 2019, AT 1:00 PM IN ST. STEPHEN'S CEMETERY, CROGHAN, WITH THE REV. DONALD J. MANFRED, OFFICIATING.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church Restoration Fund; PO Box 38; Croghan, NY 13327 or to the Croghan Fire Department, 6860 Fire Hall St, Croghan, NY 13327.
