CROGHAN, NY ~ Shirley A. Briot, 70, of 7088 Kirschnerville Rd., Croghan, died peacefully and surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she had been admitted on Sunday.

Shirley was born on August 13, 1946 in Lowville, NY, a daughter of Winifred A. and Aletha Crouse Haggerty. She attended a small country schoolhouse on the Number 3 Road in Lowville until the 5th grade when she transferred to Lowville Academy from where she graduated in 1964.

She married Thomas H. Briot on February 27, 1965 at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.  She and her husband began their family in Castorland, before moving to Croghan where they continued to raise their five daughters.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Shirley also worked at the Five and Dime Store in Lowville before moving on to work at Beaverite Products, Inc., in Beaver Falls until the company went on strike in the 1980’s.

Surviving in addition to her loving husband, Tom, of 52 years, are her five daughters, Amy (John) O’Connor, of Raleigh, NC, Carol Camporeale, Sheri (Brian) Staie, Rhonda Hulbert and Sandy (David) Meyer, all of Croghan; nineteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; her siblings, Patricia (Paul) Wheeler, of Copenhagen NY, Wayne (Ann) Haggerty, of Conover, NC, Mary (Olin) Lyndaker, of Copenhagen, NY, Larry Haggerty, of Lowville and Jim (Deanna) Haggerty, of Concord, NC, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Winifred W. Haggerty, and nephews Michael Haggerty and Todd Beyer.

Shirley enjoyed visiting casinos, camping with her family and search-a-word puzzles.  She always loved hosting family gatherings with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of her service at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Parish Relations or to the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion Auxiliary, both in Croghan.

All are welcome to attend a “get together” following her service at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Dave Meyer, 7106 Kirschnerville Rd., Croghan.
