LOWVILLE, NY ~ Robert H. Snow, 95, formerly of 5701 Brookside Circle, died peacefully Thursday morning March 28, 2013 in the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where he had resided since October 9, 2012. Before moving to Lowville in 2007 he was a longtime resident of Lewis Street in Beaver Falls.

Robert was born on September 15, 1917, in Hermon, NY, a son of Floyd W. and Lela B. Dake Snow.  He was a 1934 graduate of Hermon High School and then graduated from Springfield College, Springfield, MA in 1938, with a BS in Physical Education and a minor in science.

In 1939, he accepted his first teaching position in Chaumont where he taught for 2 years prior to the war as a Physical Education, Chemistry and General Science teacher.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Snow was inducted into the US Army on May 2, 1941 in Albany, NY and served with the 52nd Medical Battalion at Fort Jackson, SC. On August 8, 1941, he became a noncommissioned officer Corporal. He was selected and attended Officer Candidate School in Fort Knox, KY from April 9, 1942 to July 3, 1942. On July 4, 1942, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and entered active duty. He was assigned to the 4th Armored Division at Fort Drum where he served as the platoon leader with the 322nd Infantry Regiment until being transferred to California to help form a new Armored Infantry Regiment. In April of 1943 he was assigned to the newly formed Company C of the 81st Infantry Division where he served in the South Pacific, primarily in the Eastern Mandates, Palau, New Caledonia and the Philippine Islands. When the war ended he was on Leyete Island, and in December 1945, served occupation duty in Hirosaki, Northern Japan.  Upon arriving home on January 15, 1946, he was transferred from active duty at Fort Dix, NJ as the Captain of the 322nd Regiment 81st Division to the US Army Reserve of Fort Drum where he remained until his Honorable Discharge as an Infantry Captain on April 1, 1953.

He married Carolyn Simonet on January 27, 1943 in Phoenix, AZ, and together they enjoyed 65 years of marriage until the time of Mrs. Snow’s death on March 10, 2008.

Following the war, Mr. Snow taught and worked as the Physical Education Director and Coach at the Beaver River Central School until 1949. From 1946 until 1948 he also did graduate work at Syracuse University.

In 1949, he took a position in the Sales Division of Beaverite Products Inc., of Beaver Falls. He retired after 33 years of service in 1982 as the assistant to the Manager of Inside Sales of the Covering and Indexing Department.

Bob was a longtime member of the Carlowden Country Club, Carthage Elks Lodge #1762, Beaver River Memorial Post #1663 American Legion in Croghan, Stillwater Hunting Club, Long Pond Hunting Club and was a retired member of the Beaver Falls Fire Department.
Mr. Snow enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests, especially hunting, fishing and feeding the birds.  He particularly liked college basketball, was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending his winters in Brooksville, FL.

He was of the United Methodist Faith.

Surviving are nephews, Don Edward Snow and Lawrence Snow, both of Hermon, NY, and Herbert Stowell of Reno, NV; nieces, Laura Singer of Northville, NY, Gail Kelley Moad of Buchanan, MI, and Lynn Snow of Blanco, TX, and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother William Snow, who died on July 18, 1972, his sister Lois Stowell, who died on January 18, 1998, a nephew Gerald Snow who died on February 3, 2007, and a niece Patricia Woodward.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, from the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired United Methodist Minister, officiating.  Interment with Military Honors will follow the service in Riverside Annex Cemetery Beaver Falls.

There will be no calling hours.
