CROGHAN, NY ~ Ralph N. “Red” Grimmer, 89, died Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, NY.
Born May 2, 1935 at the former Idle Ease Birthing Center in Croghan, a son of Nestor and Katherine Wagner Grimmer, he graduated from Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan in 1952.
Following his graduation, he worked for George Muth Painting for three years before entering the US Army in 1956. He served with the 1st Cav Div MP CO APO 24 at Fort Hood and overseas in Korea before being honorably discharged as an SP 4 in 1961. Upon returning home, he went to work for Climax Manufacturing in Castorland, and later at Beaverite Products, Inc. in Beaver Falls before retiring.
Ralph was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus since 1952. He was a member of the Lowville VFW Post 6912, and was also a former member of the Croghan Fire Department.
“Red’ liked all kinds of sports, especially playing and watching golf, and watching his beloved Buffalo Bills and NY Mets. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Carl, who was killed in a tragic automobile accident on the way to his wedding in 1968, and his sister, Joan Thompson, who died in 2018.
Ralph’s funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home in Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, June 20th from 3 – 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
