LOWVILLE/CROGHAN, NY ~ Peggy V. Geiger, 83, formerly of Croghan, died peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2015, in the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since 2008. Prior to becoming a resident of the facility, she had lived on Eugene Street and at Brookside Terrace in Lowville.
Born September 29, 1931, in Harrisburg, PA, the daughter of Harold L. and Beatrice Ebersole Geiger, she was a 1949 graduate of Selinsgrove, PA High School. She received her BS in Education from Syracuse University in 1963, her Master’s Degree from SU in 1971, and received 12 hours toward her Doctorate while there.
In 1950, Miss Geiger went to work as a Type Inspector for The Sheltered Workshop, sponsored by IBM, in Endicott, NY. In 1953 she became a Coil Inspector for Endicott Coil Company, an IBM subdivision, also in Endicott. She moved to Syracuse, NY with her family in 1955 where she entered SU. In 1963, she became an elementary school teacher at Beaver River Central School, and throughout her career there, taught grades 1 through 4. She retired in 1989 after 26 years of service.
A communicant, Religious Education Instructor, and former choir member of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, Miss Geiger was also a very active volunteer for the parish, and was a member of its Altar Rosary Society. Additionally, she was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association and N.E.A. (National Education Association). She was a former member of the Croghan Community Chorus and Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Auxilary.
“Peggy” had a wide variety of hobbies and interests and particularly enjoyed singing, working with ceramics, flower gardening and reading.
She is survived by a brother, Harold L. Geiger, Jr., and a niece, Sarah Eileen Geiger, both of Perryville, NY, and her long-time special caregiver, Joanne Kellogg, of Lowville, and special friend, Dorrie Boliver, of Croghan.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, Retired Methodist Minister and personal friend of Miss Geiger, taking part. Spring Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, January 27th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
