Pearl Hayes Obituary

CROGHAN, NY ~ Pearl L. Hayes, 34 days short of her 100th birthday, formerly of Main St., Croghan, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since January, 2013.

Born November 28, 1916 in Croghan, NY, one of twelve children of William J. and Flora N. Zehr, she was educated in Croghan schools.

She married Richard H. Hayes on June 22, 1940 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church Parsonage in Beaver Falls.  Following her marriage, she and her husband moved to the East Road in Castorland, and later moved to Croghan in the early 1950’s.  Mr. Hayes died in 1986.

Mrs. Hayes was a caring and loving mother and homemaker all of her life and took great pleasure in being an active part of five living generations.  Throughout her life, she continuously was energetic with knitting, quilting and other craftwork, nurturing her beautiful vegetable gardens, and enjoyed working on puzzles right up until the time of her death.  Her most favorite times were those spent with her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

She was a former member of the Salem Christian Fellowship Church in Beaver Falls, was a longtime member of the former Castorland Baptist Church, and was currently affiliated with the Lowville Baptist Church in Lowville.

Surviving are a son and two daughters and their spouses, Thomas R. and Sandy Hayes, of Columbia, TN, Flora E. and Joseph Perry, of Lowville, and Brenda M. and Verle Walters, of Harrisville; nine grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Delia Martin, of Croghan, and Amelia Hill, of Lowville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five sisters, including her triplet sisters, Dora Kloster, Dorothy Kloster and Doris Hill, Florence Hellinger and Mae Farney; four brothers, Leon, Arthur, Roy and Ira Zehr, and her great granddaughter, Toni Hayes, who died in 2014.  

Pearl’s funeral will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with Dr. Leon E. Runner, Pastor of the Lowville Baptist Church, Lowville, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Croghan Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be on Friday, October 28th, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
