CROGHAN, NY ~ Paul J. Martin, 91, of Long Pond Rd., Croghan, died peacefully at home and surrounded by his children on Saturday, January 7, 2017, where he had been under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.
Born February 17, 1925 in Watertown, NY, he was a son of William R. and Angela Pate Martin, and was a 1942 graduate of Beaver River Central School.
A WWII veteran, Mr. Martin entered the US Army on December 20, 1943, and served with the 318th Fighter Control Squadron attached to the 7th Air Force which was part of the Army Air Corps. He served primarily in the Pacific and Hawaiian Islands and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on April 6, 1946 from Fort Dix, NJ.
Following his war service, he returned home and married Edna Boliver in 1946 in Indian River, and together, raised their large family of six children in Croghan. He later married Evelyn L. Martin in 1970 in Mohawk, NY, who died in 2005.
In his younger years, Paul worked in local paper mills and was also a logger. In 1960, he went to work as a Lineman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1249 out of Syracuse. Throughout his career as a construction lineman, he worked all over the state and also on the state’s big 765 line which runs to New York City. He retired in 1987 after 26 years of service.
Mr. Martin was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan. He was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion, Croghan, and the Lowville VFW Post 6912.
As an active outdoorsman for much of his life, he especially enjoyed hunting, trapping and was a very avid reader. Paul will always be remembered for his love of family and his particularly keen wit and humor.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Joyce Martin, of Glenfield, and Roger and Michelle Martin, of Lowville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marjorie and Keith Korpela, of Croghan, Loretta and Paul McDermid, of Deer River, and Kay Sabo, of Croghan; a stepson and daughter-in-law, William and Diane Palmieri; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Marie and Dominick Vacco; ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter; three nephews, and his very special friend, Todd Phelan.
He was predeceased by a son, Jerry A. Martin, who died in 1966, and a brother, Harold Martin, who died in 2003.
Paul’s funeral will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in spring in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 11th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
