Paul C. Chamberlain

HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Paul C. Chamberlain, 92, a resident of United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton, NY, formerly of Harrisville, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at Canton – Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam where he had been admitted.

Born October 14, 1925 in Harrisville, NY, the son of Wellington P. and Birdella M. (Weaver) Chamberlain, he was a graduate of Harrisville High School.

A WWII veteran, he entered the US Navy on July 23, 1943 and served as a gunner aboard Navy vessels including the USS Pittsburgh, the Franklin Aircraft Carrier, the SS Buena Vista and the USS Cates. Many of his missions was to help and support fellow sailors and other soldiers while serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations at Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and for which he became the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 stars.  He was honorably discharged as a Fireman First Class from Lido Beach, LI, NY on March 10, 1946. 

Following his Naval service he returned to Harrisville and went to work for the St. Regis Paper Company in Harrisville.

He married Margaret M. Lancor on March 29, 1948 in St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville.

Paul eventually went to work for the Jones & Laughlin Steel corporation at Benson Mines in Star Lake working as a stock room clerk and union officer for the Steel Workers for 30 years until it’s closing in 1978, and from where he never took a sick day in his entire 30 years of service.  Afterwards, he became a bus driver for the Harrisville Central School District for 18 years before retiring from there.

He was a communicant of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, and was a member of the former Harrisville American Legion and Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Paul’s favorite pastimes were golfing, travelling, hunting and going to camp in his younger years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret “Peg” of 70 years, who resides in Canton; a daughter and son-in-law, Paula J. and Kevin Cole, of Colton, two sons and daughters-in-law, David W. and Carol Chamberlain, of Russell, and Joseph D. and Melissa Chamberlain, of Ft. Covington, and eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Danny P. Chamberlain, and his two sisters, Leatrice Siver and Elaine “Lannie” Schackleford.

A Graveside Committal Service with military honors will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Francis Solanus Cemetery in Harrisville, with the Rev. Donald Manfred, Pastor of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, officiating.  A funeral luncheon will follow at the Harrisville Fire Hall.
