CROGHAN, NY ~ Paul A. Aucter, 85, formerly of 8222 Bush Rd., Croghan, died peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Lewis County Health Related Care Facility, Lowville, where he had resided since July, 2011.

Born on April 2, 1930 in the Town of New Bremen, NY, a son of George J. and Ethel Gerow Aucter, he attended Bush Corners Country School and received his secondary education at the former Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.

He married Beverly A. LaGrow on February 10, 1951 at St. James Church in Carthage, NY.  Mrs. Aucter died on December 18, 1994.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he entered the US Army on February 13, 1951, and served overseas with the 49th Field Artillery Battalion C Battery of the 7th Infantry Division.  A recipient of the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star and United Nations Service Medal, he was honorably discharged as a Private 2nd Class on November 14, 1952.

In his younger years, Paul worked at the Croghan Block Mill, for the Rice Veneer Company in Old Forge, and as a logger in Smith Road country near Number Four.  During most of the 1960’s, he worked as a 4th hand and in the Grinding Room for the J.P. Lewis Company in Beaver Falls.  In 1968, he went to work as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for the Town of New Bremen Highway Department, from where he retired in 1993 after nearly 25 years of service.

He was a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post #1663 American Legion in Croghan, the Lowville VFW, and was a Life Member of the Beaver River Fish & Game Club.

He shall long be remembered by his family and friends as a kind and gentle man who enjoyed the company of friends, splitting wood, raising pigs as a hobby and the very special times spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren at a “Grandpa’s Barbecue”.  Throughout much of his adult life

Surviving are six children, Paula A. Biasone, of Syracuse, Errol A. “Tony” and wife, Bonnie Aucter, of Croghan, NY, Cora A. and husband, Milton Howard, of Florence, AL, Vada A. Aucter, of White River Junction, VT, Valda A. and husband Alan Arndt, of Deer River, NY, and Maria A. and husband, Thomas Freeland, of Plainfield, NH; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; a brother, Clifford Aucter, of Ellington, CT, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to Beverly, his loving wife of 43 years, he was predeceased by four brothers, Bernard, Kenneth, Lyle and Ronald Aucter, and four sisters, Anna Suiter, Joan Davoy, Ruth Hamblin and Rita Muncy.

Paul’s funeral service will be held on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with Duane Farney and Floyd Graves, Ministers of the Croghan Apostolic Christian Church, officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Carthage.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, May 7th, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
