Nancy Zehr Obituary

CROGHAN, NY ~ Nancy J. Zehr, 72, of 9909 Main St., Croghan, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at home surrounded by her loving family, where she had been under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

Born April 7, 1941, in Lowville, NY, a daughter of Everett and Geraldine Whalen Lallier, she was educated at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan until the 11th grade and was graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1959.

She married Robert L. Zehr on April 16, 1966 at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Anthony Moore, OFM, officiating.

In her younger years, Nancy was a stay-at-home Mom, from where she did babysitting for area families.  In the early 1980’s, she went to work in the Housekeeping Department of the Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, and retired from there in 2003.

Nancy was a long time avid bowler, and was extremely proud of being a member of the Croghan ladies team that won the NYS Women’s Bowling Championship in Rochester in the early 1980’s.  She also liked going to camp, and above all, immensely enjoyed time spent with her family, especially her “grandkids” and “great grandkids”.

She was a member of the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Beaver River Fish & Game Club, Long Pond Snow Sled Club and Lowville Marine Corps League.

Surviving besides her husband of 47 years, Robert, are her daughter and son-in-law, Lory M. and David Hoch, of Croghan; five grandchildren, Tyler, Caleb, Ryan, Lane and Macey, two great grandchildren, Hunter and Hayden; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Robinson.

Nancy’s funeral services will be held on Friday, September 20th, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Thursday, September 19th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department, or Lewis County Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367.
