CARTHAGE, NY ~ Michael R. Kerfien, 68, of 10922 State Rt. 126, Carthage, died peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at his residence, where he was under the care of his loving family and Jefferson County Hospice.
Born May 13, 1945, in Lowville, NY, a son of Leonard J. and Gladys McLane Kerfien, he was educated at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan and Beaver River Central School.
A marriage to Carol Cooley of Carthage ended in divorce.
Mike worked at various jobs before retiring from Beaverite Products, Inc., in Beaver Falls after 30+ years of service.
He was a member of the Summit Hunting Club at Stillwater where he enjoyed hunting with his close friend Bobby Purcell.
He will be sadly missed by his loving family and many close friends.
Surviving are two sons, John M. and (wife) Robin, of Theresa, NY, and Jeffrey J. and (companion) Annette Davoy, of Carthage, NY; a daughter, Victoria A. and (husband) Douglas Kirkbride, of Castorland, NY; two grandchildren, Alicia Danforth and Jacob Kerfien; his long-time companion, Joyce Sweatt, with whom he resided; two brothers, James Kerfien and (companion) Kay Manzer, of Castorland, and Joseph Kerfien, of Glenfield; three sisters, Helen and (husband) William Raymond, of Chase Lake, Shirley and Robert Hoppel, and Doris and Carl Hoppel, all of Castorland; a brother-in-law, Thomas Tabolt, of Lowville, and several uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are five step-grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister and brother, Rosemary Tabolt and John Kerfien, and his sister-in-law, Kathy Kerfien.
Mike’s funeral services will be on Monday, June 17, 2013, beginning with an 11:15 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, NY, followed by a 12 Noon Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Prayer Service on Monday at the funeral home.
