CROGHAN/HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Mary Ann Reed, 87, formerly of Steepleview Courts, Croghan, and Maple Street, Harrisville, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Friday, September 16, 2016 at Hospice of Jefferson County – The Ellis Farm in Watertown, NY. Prior to being admitted at the Hospice facility, she had been a two year resident of the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville.
One of ten children, she was born on September 22, 1928 in Croghan, NY, a daughter of Wilfrid J. and Imelda M. LaBrasseur Proulx, and was educated at the former Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan. Following high school, she worked at the Big Moose Resort in Eagle Bay, and later, at Beaverite Products, Inc., in Beaver Falls.
She married Everett C. Reed on October 9, 1948 at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan. After their marriage, the couple moved to Fine and later to Harrisville where they resided and raised their family and where she and her husband owned and operated Reed’s Texaco in the heart of the village for seventeen years. Mr. Reed died on December 9, 1980.
Mary Ann was a long time communicant of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, was a member of its Daughters of Isabella, and was instrumental in forming the church’s funeral luncheon committee and its Lenten Fish Fries. She was also a very active volunteer of the Harrisville community, serving on the local Election Board, as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and starting the Flag Fund as a member of the Adirondack Grange #530.
Throughout her life, she always took pleasure in staying active, enjoyed bowling in her younger years, was an avid reader, and above all, loved her family. Mary Ann always liked to tell the story of how her mother, who came from St. Godefroi, Quebec, Canada, and her father, who was from Riviere Beaudette, Quebec, had met when her father and his brother had traveled from Croghan to St. Godefroi, Quebec, Canada to build a barn, which in turn, led to a year-long romance. Their romance continued through their letters to each other for a year, before asking her father for her hand in marriage.
Surviving are her four children, Patrick S. (Belinda) Reed, of Central NY, Deborah A. (Richard) Matthews, of McSherrystown, PA, Pamela M. Reed, of Suffern, NY, and Penny L. Decoteau (Lynn Raymond), of Dexter, NY; six grandchildren, Michael Reed, Steven Reed, Timothy Matthews, Megan Saunders, Jenna Middleton and Jonathon Decoteau, and seven great grandchildren; three brothers, Donald “Frenchy” Proulx, Wilfrid “Stump” (Ellen “Kee”) Proulx, Jr., and Kenneth (Joyce) Proulx, all of Croghan; five sisters, Theresa (Leo) Rosiczkowski, of Turin, Janet (Richard ) Mathys, of Austin, TX, Elizabeth “Betty Ann” Ritz (Floyd “Fudgie”) Leonard, of Harrisville, Simone (Thomas) Ward, of Florida, and Patricia (Butch) Bramhall, of Soft Maple, and numerous nieces and nephews.
