Croghan, NY ~ Mary F. Knight, 90, of 6876 Mechanic St., Croghan, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday morning March 5, 2016, at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, Lowville, where she had been a resident since January 14, 2016.
Mary was born on June 10, 1925, in the Town of New Bremen, a daughter of John M. and Anna Becker Briot. She was a lifelong resident of the area and had attended country schools in Kirschnerville and was a graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.
On August 7, 1942, she married Leland A. Knight in Carthage, NY. Mr. Knight died on August 7, 1989.
From 1951 to 1959, Mary was employed as a cheesemaker with Hoffman & Dudo Inc. in New Bremen. In 1959, she went to work as a cart machine operator and gluer at Climax Manufacturing in Castorland. She was employed there for 30 years and retired on November 17, 1989.
She was a member of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan and was also a member of its Rosary Society. She was a very active community volunteer, a 50 year member with the VFW Post 6912 in Lowville, a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 Auxiliary in Croghan, the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and the Beaver River Senior Citizens.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lee J. and Mary Knight, of Croghan, and a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Richard Perrigo, of Theresa; seven grandchildren, Julie (Eric) McCort, Tina (Bob) Johnson, Richard (Becky) Knight, Thomas Knight, Danny (Tracy) Brown, Jimmy Brown and Colleen (Dan) Morak, and fifteen great-grandchildren, Justin, Erica, Dillon, Rebecca, Hunter, Damien, Matthew, Emily, Cory, Chase , Jessica, Nick, Paul, Jeff, and Katie, and five great great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Harland Campany, of Croghan; a son-in-law, David Brown, of Lowville, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Brown, a grandson, Anthony Campany, a great grandson, Lucas Anthony Knight, and two sisters, Barbara Dekin and Dorothy Briot.
Funeral services for Mary will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2016, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, March 9th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
