CASTORLAND, NY ~ Martha B. Campany, 95, formerly of 9513 Artz Rd., Castorland, died peacefully on Monday, November 19, 2012, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since August, 2010.

Born Martha Agnes Bockenheim on July 11, 1917, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, a daughter of Wesley and Mary Bush Bockenheim, she graduated from Fr. Leo Memorial High School and completed the teacher education program at Potsdam Normal School.  She later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from SUNY Potsdam.  Martha spent the early part of her career teaching at various one room school houses in the Croghan area and was a third grade teacher at Beaver River Central School when she retired.

Martha married James L. Campany on August 26, 1940 at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan. Mr. Campany died on February 7, 2007.

She enjoyed traveling, music, dancing, shopping and family gatherings.  She especially loved local school sporting events and music concerts in which her children, and later grandchildren and great grandchildren participated.

Martha was very active at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church where she was a communicant, a member of the Rosary Society and Parish Relations Committee.  She was also a member of the New York State Teachers’ Association, Potsdam Alumni Association, Beaver Falls Grange, Beaver River Senior Citizens, and was a very active member of the American Maple Museum in Croghan.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney J. and Carolyn, of Concord, NC, and Lynn R. and Gail, of Harrisville, NY; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Eleanor M. and Bernard Bush, of Croghan, Karen R. and Gary Wrayno, of Raleigh, NC, and Linda Campany, of Greensboro, NC; a son-in-law, John Powers, of Black River, NY; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother, Stephen Buckingham, of Croghan, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased a daughter, Dorris A. Powers, who died in 2009, a son, Joseph, who died 2011, six sisters, Anita Yousey and Arletha Bockenheim, who were twins, Dorothy Bockenheim, Mary Edwards, Margaret Kuhl, and Clare Young, and two brothers, Claude and Louis Bockenheim.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 21st, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. prayer service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be from 6 – 9 p.m. Tuesday (TODAY) at the funeral home.
