HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Lloyd V. Dashnaw, 81, of 14209 Church St., Harrisville died suddenly Sunday afternoon March 22, 2015 at his residence.
Lloyd was born on October 16, 1933 in Gouverneur, NY in the former VanDuzee Hospital, the son of Frank and Evelyn Clark Dashnaw.
He was a 1951 graduate of Gouverneur High School and later was graduated from SUNY Brockport where he received his BS Degree in elementary education in 1955. In 1961 he received his Masters Degree in School Administration from SUNY Potsdam.
From 1955 to 1957 he proudly served with the US Army just after the end of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged for his active duty role and then joined the Army Reserves and served as the Commander of the 332nd Ordinance Battalion in Watertown. In 1980 he retired from the Reserve after 25 years at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He began his teaching career in 1957 at the Hermon-DeKalb School where he taught fifth grade, and transferred his talents to the Harrisville Elementary School system where he accepted a position as a fifth grade teacher there in 1959. He eventually became the Harrisville Elementary School Principal in 1980, and retired in 1994 as Principal of its high school.
He married Joan M. Quinlan on January 3, 1959 at St. James Church in Gouverneur. Mrs. Dashnaw died on December 23, 2010.
Lloyd was a longtime communicant of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council and Finance Committee member. He also was a faithful member of the St. Francis Solanus Council #7733 Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, was a member of its Color Guard, and in 1986, he was honored as the recipient of the “Knight of the Year”.
A devoted member to his community, he served on the Village Board for 43 consecutive years and was recognized by the State of New York as the longest consecutive serving member of a village board in NYS. He was a 50 year member of the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department and Captain of its Fire Police, and was also a member of the Town of Diana Development Corporation. He was also a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, the Carthage Elks Lodge #1762 and the Carthage Lions Club.
In his younger years he was the wrestling coach at Harrisville School, a Boy Scout leader and was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts.
Surviving are his four children, Gregory P. Dashnaw of Albany, Timothy F. Dashnaw of Harrisville, Christopher J. (Elizabeth) Dashnaw of Canton and Cherilyn M. (Chris) Tallant of Binghamton; six grandchildren, Kelsey Dashnaw,Sarah Goobic,Sophie Goobic, Isabel Dashnaw, Gabriel Tallant, Madelyn Tallant and another baby Tallant expected to arrive in May; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his loving wife, Joan, of 51+ years, he was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Rita Iloff and Sandra Delaney.
Lloyd’s funeral will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015, beginning with a 9:45 AM Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass from St. Francis Solanus Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Spring Burial with Military Honors will be in St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur.
Calling hours will be on Thursday March 26th, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
