Leonard Carl Jackson

CARTHAGE, NY ~ Leonard C. “Lenny” Jackson, 83, passed away Wednesday evening, May 28, 2025 at his home in Carthage.

Born October 23rd, 1941 in Beaver Falls, NY to Ralph and Marie (Thesier) Jackson, Lenny grew up on the family farm with his brother Gary, on Jackson Lane.  There were many stories of his childhood and working on the farm, alongside his father.

Lenny graduated from Beaver River High School in 1959, and then served in the Army Reserves,

Lenny married Nancy A. Lyndaker daughter of the late Peter J. and Genevieve Lyndaker, on August 31st, 1963 at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.  The couple resided in the village of Carthage for many years, where they raised their children, Dennis and Cheryl, and eventually moved to their home on the Texas Road.  They also owned a camp on Lake Bonaparte, where they developed lifelong friendships, memories and great times at “the lake”.   Nancy passed away on March 22nd, 2021, and Lenny continued to maintain their home until his passing.

Lenny was a “jack of all trades” and worked part time carpentry, but his lifelong devotion of work was for the James River Paper Corporation (previously Crown Zellerbach).  He had an unmatched work ethic, was recognized and received promotions and accolades for his accomplishments and hard work.  He retired as Maintenance Superintendent, and in retirement, enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, watching NASCAR and was an avid NY Yankees fan. He was very proud of shooting an 8-point buck, just last Fall with his hunting companions Steve Miller and Mark Clarke.  Lenny loved nothing more than having “bragging rights” when it came to almost any sport or card game.

Lenny is survived by his son Dennis (Julie) Jackson, Carthage, his daughter Cheryl Schroy (fiancée Allen Bango) of Harrisville.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Genevieve “Genna” (Robert) Grimm, Zachary Jackson, Dylan (Paige) Schroy, Joshua Jackson; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Joyce Jackson, Genie and Louise Lyndaker, Marietta Virkler, and Beverly Bush, and his beloved pup “Lola”.  In addition, he has five great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife Nancy, his brother Gary Jackson, brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Audrey Lyndaker, Arnie and Carolyn Lyndaker, Paul and Elaine Thayer and brothers-in-law Elwood Virkler and Ronnie Bush.

He was a member of the Croghan American Legion, the Carthage Elks Lodge 1762, the Carthage Rod & Gun Club, Carthage Fire Department, and the Spring Pond Hunting Club where he spent many a hunting season with great friends.  He not only hunted, but also spent time cooking, and was the treasurer of the club.

Calling hours will be held at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, NY, on Wednesday, June 4th from 4:00 - 7:00pm.  A funeral mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, June 5th at 10:30am at St. Stephens Church, 9748 Main St., Croghan. Burial to follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan.

Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Stephen’s Church or to the Croghan American Legion Post 1664.

Food donations for a luncheon after the funeral will be accepted at the American Legion in Croghan.  Donations in Leonard’s name may be made to either St. Stephens’ Church in Croghan, or to the American Legion in Croghan.
