Katherine Chartrand Obituary

CROGHAN, NY ~ Katherine S. Chartrand, 84, of Old State Rd., Croghan, passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017 while surrounded by her loving family, in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where she had been admitted on August 17th.

Born Nov. 29, 1932 in Acushnet, MA, a daughter of John and Evelyn (Ennes) Sylvia, she was educated in local schools, and was graduated from Middleboro High School in 1950.

Following high school, she worked as a sales person at the Middleboro W.T. Grant Store.

She married Harold D. Chartrand on November 7, 1953, at Sacred Heart Church in Middleboro, and after her husband was honorably discharged from the US Navy in December, 1954, returned to the Croghan area where she had since resided.

Katherine was a devoted wife, supportive mother and tireless homemaker to her large family.  During her life, she was also very dedicated to a variety of community service endeavors including her donation of countless hours knitting mittens and hats, and making “comfort quilts” for the terminally ill, newborns and people in need.  Much of her good will and community service was through her association with the Tug Hill Quilters, Texas Road Quilters and Lewis County Opportunities.

Throughout the years, Katherine also took pleasure in traveling, especially trips to Maine, fishing salmon and steelhead on Lake Ontario, was a life-long Boston Red Sox fan, and loved the most anytime spent with her family.

Surviving besides her loving husband, Harold, of over 63 years, are nine children, Michael K. Chartrand, of Watertown, NY, Brian R. (Christine) Chartrand, of Castorland, Cynthia L. (Keith) Sixberry, of Carthage, John J. (Caron) Chartrand, of Croghan, identical twin sons, David S. (Beverly) Chartrand of Oswego and Daniel S. (Darlene) Chartrand, of Watertown, NY, Anselm F. Chartrand, of Castorland, Louis A. (Debbie) Chartrand, of Boiceville, NY, and Theresa L. (Eric) Moore, of Appleton, WI; twenty-five grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Stearns, of Plainville, MA, and Lorraine Chapman, of Mansfield, MA; three sisters-in-law, Kate Kraus, of Liverpool, NY, Sally Shaw, of Croghan, and Ann Chartrand, of Lowville, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter, April Chartrand, who died in 1983, and her brother, John Sylvia.

Katherine’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 12 Noon at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with Pastor Bruce Chartrand, officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
