LOWVILLE, NY ~ June M. Woolschlager, 87, of 6543 Tillman Rd., Lowville, died peacefully late Wednesday, November 6, 2013, in the comfort of her home while under the care of her loving family and Lewis County Hospice.
Born on August 27, 1926, in Trenton, NJ, the oldest child of George and Lillie King Gaul, she was educated and graduated from high school in Audobon, NJ.
She married Ambrose J. Woolschlager, her husband of 60 years, on January 9, 1946, at St. Peter’s Church, Lowville, with the Rev. Msgr. Hogan, officiating. Mr. Woolschlager died on October 2, 2006.
In addition to her most important job as a mother and homemaker, Mrs. Woolschlager had worked at Lewis County General Hospital for over 20 years, retiring in 1988. She was also a professional seamstress and was well known throughout the area for fabricating beautiful wedding gowns, prom dresses, formal attire and making dolls. Parishioners of the former St. Peter’s Church in New Bremen, now St. Peter’s Oratory, will especially remember her as an avid pianist, organ player and soloist at their Sunday Masses for many years.
Throughout her life, she was an ardent reader of novels, liked macramé and ceramic crafting, enjoyed working alongside her husband as his “masonary assistant” especially while they built their home together in 1957, and will fondly be remembered by her family as a passionate cook and baker.
Mrs. Woolschlager was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, and was a member of its Rosary Society.
Surviving are her five children, including three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J. and Geraldine Woolschlager, and Jeffrey A. and Mary E. Woolschlager, all of Lowville, and Peter J. and Kathleen Woolschlager, of Croghan; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan A. and David Bernat, of Beaver Falls, and Tina M. Lavery, of Lowville; 19 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter; a brother, George Gaul, New Jersey; three sisters, Lillie Fitzpatrick, of Tabernacle, NJ, Judith Steele, of Stevenson, AL, and Linda Sesters, of Colorado Springs, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Janet Tiver, and a brother, Richard Gaul.
June’s funeral services will be held on Monday, November 11, 2013, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling hours for family and friends will be on Sunday, November 10th, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
