Joan Raymond Obituary

LOWVILLE, NY ~ Joan Marie Raymond, 83, of 7585 Cardinal Lane at Brookside Senior Living, Lowville, was called home on Thursday, October 1, 2015 after a graceful and courageous battle with several health issues at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility in Lowville, where she was surrounded by her loving family, after being admitted on September 24th.

Born January 17, 1932 in Brewerton, NY, a daughter of Francis and Anita Davison Parkhurst, she received her early education in Utica and later was graduated from Lowville Free Academy with the class of 1950.

She married Richard A. Raymond on November 11, 1950 at St. Peter’s Church, Lowville, with the Rev. Robert L. Cotter, officiating.  Mr. Raymond died on November 15, 2004.

In her earlier years, she worked at the former Farney’s Soda Bar in Lowville and at Empsall’s Department Store in Watertown.  She later became a Tupperware sales representative and eventually became a regional manager for the company before retiring to take care of her husband prior to his death.

Joan was a member of Bethel Church of The Nazarene in Lowville and was a very active church volunteer particularly with bible study.

Throughout her life she enjoyed many pastimes including bird watching and card games at Brookside.  Some of her most enjoyable moments were spent babysitting her great grandchildren who always called her “Other Grandma”.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James M. and Kay Raymond of Newark, Delaware, and David L. Raymond, of Syracuse; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Jo and Bruce Mushtare, of Lowville, Rebecca A. and Edwin Evans Jr. of Lowville, and Susan Ennis, of Castorland; twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Parkhurst, of Woodbury, CT; two sisters, Hope Blencowe, of Durhamville, NY and Karen Freedman, of Frankfort, NY, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, Richard, of 54 years, she was predeceased by her daughter, Sandra O’Connor, her great grandson Sean Brennan, and her brother, Neil Parkhurst.

A funeral service for Joan will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Church of The Nazarene, 7746 State Rt. 12, Lowville, with Keith Hardy, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Lowville Rural Cemetery, Lowville.

Calling hours will be on Monday, October 5th, from 4-7 p.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
