HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Jean Ann Young, 84, of Harrisville, peacefully passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 with her family at her side in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, NY. She had resided at their Extended Care Facility since 2015.
Born in Harrisville, NY on September 11, 1933, a daughter of Floyd and Dorothy (Mayhew) Reader, she graduated from Harrisville High School with the class of 1951. Following high school, she worked as a telephone operator.
She married Frederic Smith on August 5, 1953 in Harrisville, NY, and moved to Corpus Christi, TX, where her husband was stationed in the US Navy. Upon her husband’s discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to Harrisville. From 1960 until 1967, she and her husband, along with Carl and Laverna Ripley, purchased a grocery store and market on lower Maple Street that became the R & S Market, from where they lived and continued to raise their family. Mr. Smith, who was a volunteer fireman, died suddenly on May 9, 1972 from a heart attack while responding to a structure fire in Harrisville.
On February 2, 1974, she married Richard Young and continued to reside in Harrisville. Mr. Young died in December, 2001.
Jean began her career as a medical receptionist in 1970 when she went to work for Dr. Neil at the Harrisville Medical Center. Following Dr. Neil’s departure, she worked as a medical receptionist and office manager at Carthage Area Hospital where she primarily worked for Drs. Khan and Siddiqui, until she returned to the Harrisville Medical Center where she worked in the same capacity for Dr. Beane until she retired in the early 1990’s.
She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church in Harrisville where she was very active with their vacation Bible schools. She was a past active volunteer member of the former Harrisville American Legion, the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary and Gutter Dusters Bowling League.
An ardent reader and knitter, she also enjoyed her family’s hunting club in Cranberry Lake, and especially loved spending time with family and friends at her Lake Bonaparte home, where she was affectionately known by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren as “Gramma Lake”.
Surviving are her four daughters, Sheri L. Young and companion, Bill Hornig, of Lowville, Shelley M. Irish and husband, Terry, of Shrewsbury, MA, Sandra J. Weaver and husband, Todd, of Harrisville, and Susan J. Mead and husband, Robert, of Burlington, NJ; three sons, Richard K. Young and wife, Donna, of Oklahoma, Drew A. Young, of Cranberry Lake, and Bart E. Young and wife, Kim, of Harrisville; fourteen grandchildren, Jeanna M. Kill, Richard F. Young, Gregor M. Irish, Callie M. Monte, Kelsey M. Irish, Hannah P. Butts, Nathan A. Weaver, Ryan J. Weaver, Jarrett F. Mead, Tanner R. Mead, Ryleigh J. Mead, Ondrea Young, Cameron J. Young and Severin L. Young; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by her brother Charles Reader, who was killed in WWII, her three sisters, Laverna Ripley, Berta Langs and Donna Hall, and her grandson, Drew Allen Young, Jr.
Jean’s funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2018, beginning with a Family Prayer Service at 10:00 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Harrisville, followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral service that all are invited to attend at the Harrisville Fire Hall. Burial will follow in the Harrisville Community Cemetery, after which, all in attendance are invited back to the Harrisville Fire Hall for a funeral luncheon.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, September 5th, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility’s Activity Fund.
