HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Helen D. Jenack, 93, formerly of Harris Courts and Maple Street, Harrisville, died on Thursday, October 18, 2012, in the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since May, 2011.
Born on February 5, 1919, the seventh of ten children, in Harrisville, NY, a daughter of Fred E. and Libby J. Caldwell Hathway, she received her early education at Tylers Corners School in Harrisville, and was graduated from Harrisville High School in 1936.
She married Edward C. “Ted” Jenack on July 4, 1936, at St. Francis Solanus Church Rectory in Harrisville by Rev. D. J. Brault. Mr. Jenack died at the age of 49 on September 5, 1967.
In addition to working as a mother and homemaker for much of her life, Helen worked as the cook for Kilbourn’s Hotel in Harrisville from the late 1960’s until 1978. She also worked as the bookkeeper for the Nutrition Program in Harrisville, which was under the Lewis County Office for the Aging, from 1976 until 1996, when she retired at the age of 75.
Her favorite pastimes included reading and doing crossword puzzles. Throughout her life, she was well known to family and friends for her great story-telling, and will always be remembered for her wit, wonderful sense of humor, and being Harrisville’s #1 NY Yankee’s Fan.
Surviving are five children; three sons, Paul E. (Kip) Jenack, of Lowville, Frederick M. Jenack, of Harrisville, and William F. (Suzanne) of Fairport, NY, and two daughters, Ellen C. (Rick ) Bush, of Lowville, and Dixie D. (Thomas) Dickinson, of Harrisville; her son-in-law, Edward J. “Punk” Finn, of Lowville; 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Polly A. Finn, who died in 2008, and all of her siblings including five brothers, Arthur, Elbert, William, Jack and Richard Hathway, and four sisters, Albertine Weaver, Lillian Youngs, Dorothy Smith, and Freda Dundon.
A Memorial Service for Helen will be held on Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., CROGHAN, with the Rev. Christopher J. Looby, Harrisville native and Pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Brushton, NY, officiating. Interment will follow in the Harrisville Community Cemetery, Harrisville.
Calling hours will be on Monday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of her service at the funeral home.
