HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Harold C. Hoover, 90, of Maple St., Harrisville, died Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, NY.
Born February 9, 1928, in Theresa, NY, a son of Howard H. and Ada M. (Cheseman) Hoover, he was educated in Theresa schools and was graduated from Theresa High School, with the class of 1946.
A military veteran, Mr. Hoover was a member of the US Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC before being honorably discharged.
He married Shirley J. Carley on February 6, 1960 at Theresa Presbyterian Church in Theresa, NY.
In his early career Harold (Ozzie) worked as a carpenter for his brother, Don Hoover, as well as working for Drew Building Supplies doing general construction and remodeling in the Theresa area. For many years, he was a general contractor and small business owner. He owned and operated Hoover’s Building Supplies, Hoover’s Home Improvement, Hoover’s Agway and Hoover’s Convenience Store & Gas Station, all in Harrisville. He ended his carpentry employment as a carpentry supervisor at Fort Drum, retiring in 1994.
He was a former member of the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department, the Harrisville Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Diana Museum, and was a very active member along with his wife in the Lake Bonaparte Conservation Club.
Harold was a cherished husband and father, his family was always a priority in his life. He was an avid New York Yankees fan all of his life, he also enjoyed carpentry projects, watching sports on television, hunting, fishing, spending time at his camp on Lake Bonaparte, and attending numerous high school concerts and sports games.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Shirley, of 58 years, are his five children, LeeAnn (Donn) Bassette, of Harrisville, NY, Kathy L. (Stuart) Gonio, of Steamboat Springs, CO, Christine M. (Royal) Ingram, of Evans Mills, NY, Karen D. Hoover (Regis Quirin), of Cranford, NJ, and Keith D. (Jennifer) Hoover, of Baldwinsville, NY; nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and his sister, Florence Dumas, of Theresa, NY.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Dorothy Keller, Wilma Hoover, Charlotte Scott, and Doris VanTassel, and two brothers, Gerald and Donald Hoover.
A Memorial Service for Harold will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Harrisville, with the Rev. Frances Hemstreet, officiating and is being limited to family and close friends. All those wishing to attend are invited to a Celebration of Life at the Harrisville Fire Hall at noon. A spring interment with military honors will be in Harrisville Community Cemetery, Harrisville at a time and date to be announced.
A GRAVESIDE COMMITTAL SERVICE WITH MILITARY HONORS FOR HAROLD C. HOOVER, 90, OF MAPLE ST., HARRISVILLE, WHO DIED ON FEBRUARY 9, 2018, WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2018 AT 11:00 A.M. IN HARRISVILLE COMMUNITY CEMETERY WITH THE REV. TRACY COOK, PASTOR OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN HARRISVILLE, OFFICIATNG.
