WATERTOWN/CROGHAN, NY ~ Gloria A. Simmons, 90, formerly of Croghan, died on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, where she had resided since June, 2010.
Born on May 26, 1925 in Belfort, NY, a daughter of Frank and Margaret Miller Largett, she received her education in country school in Belfort and Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.
A marriage to Robert Bice ended in divorce. She married Aaron Simmons on February 13, 1952 in Holy Family Church, Watertown, with Msgr. Robert J. McCarthy, officiating. Mr. Simmons died on January 3, 1982.
In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Mrs. Simmons was a caregiver for 25 years for Catholic Charities in Watertown, babysitting and taking care of infants in her home prior to adoption. She had also worked at the former Hotel Woodruff and Pine Cleaners for a number of years.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed camping, sewing and crafts, jigsaw puzzles and especially vegetable and flower gardening.
She was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Watertown.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Mary F. and James Powell, of Watertown; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Nancy Bice, Jr., of Pulaski, NY, and James N. Simmons, of Watertown, NY; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Howard, John and Edgar Largett, and three sisters, Florence French, Anastasia Miller and Frances Branagan.
A spring graveside committal service for Mrs. Simmons will be on Friday, Aril 22, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort, NY, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor of St. Stephen's Church in Croghan, officiating.
Arrangements are with Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.
