BEAVER FALLS, NY ~ Gerald F. “Joe” Steiner, 91, formerly Main St., Beaver Falls, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at Lewis Co. General Hospital, Lowville, NY. He had been a resident of the Lewis Co. Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, since 2011.
Born August 4, 1922, in Beaver Falls, NY, a son of Ernest and Harriette Droit Steiner, he was graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1939.
He married Pauline “Polly” Sweeney on May 10, 1947, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glenfield. They resided in Beaver Falls all of their 41 + years of married life until Pauline’s death on March 7, 1989.
A World War II veteran, he entered the US Army on September 2, 1942, and served in the states and fought overseas in the European Theatre of Operations with the Hdqtrs. Co. 338th Infantry Regiment 85th Division. Following being trained in Africa, he and his division went into action in Naples, Italy. Joe later became a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, among many other medals and citations he was awarded. He was honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade on November 12, 1945.
Following high school, Joe began working for the J.P. Lewis Company in Beaver Falls until he entered the service. After the war, he returned to J.P. Lewis where he remained throughout its eventual acquisitions by Latex Fibre Industries in 1972 and Boise Cascade in 1976, until his retirement in August, 1984.
Joe was a life member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, where he also served as House Committee Chairman for many years working alongside his wife doing the cooking and supervising many of the Post’s functions. He was also a life member of the Lowville VFW Post 6912. Additionally, he held honorary memberships in the Beaver Falls Volunteer Fire Department where he was Drill Master for 25 years, and the New York State Sheriff’s Association. Other memberships included the Beaver River Fish & Game Club, Greggs Lake Hunting Club, Blue Swamp Hunting Club, National Rifle Association, 338th Infantry Regimental Combat Team Association, Lowville Elks Lodge #1605, and Beaver River Senior Citizens.
One of his favorite pastimes was bowling, and for many years Joe bowled in several leagues accomplishing a single game high of 299 and a triple game high of 702 at the Beaver Falls Bowling Lanes.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Maynard E. and Marion Steiner, of Oradell, NJ, and his nephew and niece, CPO David A. Steiner, US Navy, and Elizabeth Steiner Ong, Kansas City, Missouri.
Joe’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, NY, with the Rev. Dale F. Schneeberger, Pastor, Delanson United Methodist Church, Delanson, NY, officiating.
Calling hours will be on Monday, August 12th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial with full military honors will be in Riverside Annex Cemetery, Beaver Falls.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Beaver Falls Volunteer Fire Department’s Ambulance Fund.
