CROGHAN, NY ~ Eugene P. Demo, 81, of 7162 Belfort Rd., Croghan, died peacefully on Friday, September 5, 2014 at his home where he was under the care of his loving family and Lewis Co. Hospice.

Eugene was born on June 3, 1933, in Croghan, NY, the son of Benjamin H. and Elizabeth Keenan Demo.  He was a 1951 graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan, was graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA, and later attended St. Lawrence University.

He entered the US Army on November 20, 1952, and served in England with the Trans Army RES CE until he transferred to US Army Reserves from where he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on October 31, 1960.

He married Mary Kathryn Fey on July 13, 1957 in St. Joseph’s Church, Boonville.  Mary died on July 11, 2011.

He worked at various jobs during his earlier years, including working as a Page for the New York State Assembly in Albany when his father was an Assemblyman, for the Block Mill in Croghan, painting at Camp Drum and driving truck for the Seaway Project in Massena shortly after he was married.  In 1961, he went to work for the JP Lewis Company in Beaver Falls, and retired after 34 years of service in 1995, after it had become Boise Cascade.

Gene was a communicant and former Sunday school teacher of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, and was a member of St. Stephen’s Council Knights of Columbus #2175.    He was also a member and former Commander of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, Jeff-Lewis Umpire’s Association and Blue Swamp Hunting Club.

Throughout his life he enjoyed bowling, fishing (especially with his buddy, Charlie), his many years as an umpire for high school girls softball, county and church leagues, morning socializing at Wishy’s and Nice & Easy, and taking casino trips. He also enjoyed spending time at camp and with his family.

He is survived by his five children, Susan D. (Stuart) Salmon, of Glenfield, Diane L. (Keith) Philo, of Carthage, Gary S. Demo, Joseph A. Demo and Linda A. (Daniel) Nuffer, all of Croghan; 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Demo, of Watertown, and Ellen Wallack, of Croghan, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his loving wife, Mary, of 57 years, he was predeceased by a son, Randy P. Demo, who died in 1986, a son-in-law, Richard Thomas, who died in 2010, his sister, Patricia Dustin, and three brothers, Benjamin, William and Rodney Demo.

Gene’s funeral will be held on Monday, September 8, 2014, beginning with an 8:15 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 9:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Fund or to Friends of Lewis County Hospice.
