Rome/New Bremen, NY ~ Esther G. Mattis, 98, formerly of Artz Rd., New Bremen, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Bethany Gardens in Rome, where she had been a resident since November 29, 2013.
Esther was born on August 23, 1917, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, a daughter of William A. and Harriet G. Winneur Mattis. She graduated from Lowville Free Academy, Class of 1933, Potsdam State Normal, Class of 1936, and received her Master’s Degree in Education from St. Lawrence University in Canton, Class of 1950.
During her early life, Miss Mattis taught in the Town of New Bremen rural schools. From 1941-1943, she taught elementary school on Shelter Island which was located off Long Island. In 1943, Ms. Mattis became employed by Beaver River Central School as an elementary teacher. She became the elementary school’s Supervising Principal in 1949 and retired from her educational career after twenty-nine years in 1972.
Esther was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, and attended St. John the Baptist Church in Rome. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association. Throughout her life she was an extremely active volunteer for various community groups within the area.
Surviving are two nieces, Mary Wancewicz of Rome, and Anne Ellis of Raleigh, NC; a nephew, Mark Oberriter, of Rome, and several cousins. Esther was predeceased by her sister, Eva Mae Berning on June 18, 2014.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 12, 2016, beginning with an 11:30 AM Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 12:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Leo A. Wiley, retired Pastor of St. Stephen’s, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, April 12th from 9:30 to 11:30 AM (prior to Prayer Service) at the funeral home.
