CROGHAN, NY ~ Ellen D. Wallack, 76, of 9714 State Rt. 812, Croghan, died Friday, August 24, 2018, in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, NY.
Ellen was born May 27, 1942, in Lowville, NY, a daughter of former Assemblyman Benjamin H. and Elizabeth Keenan Demo, and graduated high school from Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan in 1960. In 1964, she was graduated from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY, from where she received her B.S. Degree in Education. She later did graduate work in teaching gifted and talented children at the University of Connecticut.
She married Pierre Wallack in August, 1964, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan. Although the marriage ended in divorce in 1984, they remained life-long friends. Pierre died March 5, 2015.
Between 1964 and 1972, Ellen worked as a stay-at-home mother and substitute school teacher. In 1972, she began as a full time elementary school teacher at Beaver River Central School in Beaver Falls, retiring in 2001 after 20 years of service, which included 4th grade and the Gifted and Talented Program that left a positive impression on many of her students.
Throughout the years, Ellen enjoyed many hobbies and interests including reading, puzzles, gardening, decorative painting, and especially spending time with family and friends. In recent years, she took great pleasure in volunteering with the Croghan Food Pantry.
Surviving are two sons, Eric P. Wallack and wife, Denise Smith, of Toledo, Ohio, and Matthew J. and Lori P. (McNeil) Wallack, of Lowville; a granddaughter, Madison Wallack, of Lowville; a sister, Elizabeth Lofink Demo, of Carthage; two sisters-in-law, Helen Fredenburg Demo, of Buffalo, and Mary Alice Demo, of Massena; 25 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and great nephews.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Benjamin F., William, Rodney and Eugene Demo, and a sister, M. Patricia Bramhall Dustin.
Ellen’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, officiating. Her interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will also be on Thursday, August 30th, from 12 Noon until her 2:00 p.m. service.
