Eleanor Marie Campeau

CROGHAN, NY ~ E. Marie Campeau, 100, of Main St., Croghan, the last of her family, died on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at her home where she was under the care of her loving family and Lewis County Hospice.

Marie was born on September 12, 1925 in Croghan, NY, a daughter and one of eleven children of Claude 0. and Hilda H. (Andre) Davoy, and step-daughter of Edward DesChambeau, who married her mother after the death of her father in 1936. She was a 1942 graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan at the age of 16, and later attended machinery school in Utica.

She married William J. Campeau, Jr. on October 26, 1946 in St. Stephen's Catholic Church with the Rev. Amadeus Burke, OFM, officiating. Mr. Campeau died on January 11, 1999.

During the late 1930's until 1942, Marie worked in various capacities at the former DesChambeau's Restaurant on Main Street and as a clerk at the Croghan A&P Store. Later in 1942, after the beginning of WWII, she moved to Hartford, CT where she went to work for the Veeder Root Company, a war plant that specialized in making airplane parts, and remained there until the end of the war in 1945 when she returned to Croghan. Following her marriage, she was a full-time mother and homemaker taking care of her large family until 1966, when she went to work as a cashier and study hall monitor at Beaver River Central School, retiring in 1986.

She was a life-long communicant of St. Stephen's Church in Croghan, was a member of its Rosary Society and Parish Relations Committee, and for many years was an active volunteer for its annual Lawn Social and Christmas Bazaar. She was also a life member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion Auxiliary in Croghan.

Her many favorite pastimes included bowling, playing cards (especially Euchre), doing daily crossword puzzles and more recently, traveling to the Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

She is survived by seven children and their spouses, Florence M. Updegraft, of Glenfield, Kathleen J. and Thomas Tooker, of Carthage, Diane M. and Everett Lehman, of Dallas, TX, William J. and Tina Campeau, of Croghan, Lawrence J. and Donna Campeau, of Lowville, Paul D. and Rhonda Campeau, of Castorland, and Craig M. and Teresa Campeau, of West Monroe, NY; two sons-in-law, Anthony Weaver, of Cleveland, NY, and Kim Lyndaker, of Castorland; twenty-seven grandchildren, sixty-one great grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Lucille Davoy, of Croghan, and Clara Davoy, of Lowville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, Billy Joe, of 52 years, she was predeceased by two daughters, Susan Jane Weaver, and Mary Ann Lyndaker; her son-in-law, Kenneth E. Updegraft, Jr.; two great grandchildren, Abigail Staats and Grayson Jude Zehr; five brothers, William, James, Wilbur, Claude and Paul Davoy, and five sisters, Martha Buckingham, Elizabeth Roberts, Kathleen Aucter, Rosie Boshart and Patricia Golden.

Marie's funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. Family Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by an 11:00 a.m.  Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan.

There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Church Restoration Fund, or to Lewis Co. Friends of Hospice.
