CARTHAGE, NY ~ Edna M. Aubel, 96, of 10611 St. Rt. 126, Carthage, died on Thursday afternoon, April 4, 2013, in University Hospital in Syracuse following a brief illness.
Edna was born on January 5, 1917, in Utica, NY, the daughter of Clemence and Julia Biesha Grunert. She grew up in the Croghan area and was a graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan. She moved to Carthage in 1977.
She married Earl M. Aubel on May 27, 1938, in Conklin, NY. Mr. Aubel died on July 25, 1993.
Edna was a homemaker and a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed gardening and spending time at Long Level.
She was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.
Surviving are her five children, Philip C. (Sue Ellen) Aubel, Rosalie A. (David) Redmond, Randall W. Aubel, all of Carthage, Douglas E. (Kathy) Aubel, of Boonville, and Dawn M. Pelo, of Lowville; eight grandchildren, Mark (Gina) Aubel, Troy Aubel, Brian (Jessica) Aubel, Shawn Aubel, Heather (Art) Carter, Heidi (Eric) Lyndaker, Robert (Christen) Pelo, and Kevin Pelo; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles Grunert, of Adams, and Edward and Peg Grunert, of Lowville, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two grandsons, Hans Lehman, who died in 1994, and Darren Aubel, who died in 2004; four brothers, Herbert Grunert, Paul Grunert, Louis Grunert, Milton Grunert, and a sister, Angeline Grunert.
Edna’s funeral will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
