WATERTOWN/HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Mrs. Dorothy L. Waugh, 100, a former, longtime resident of Harrisville, died peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at home surrounded by members of her loving family.  She had been briefly under the care of Jefferson County Hospice.

Dorothy was born January 12, 1919 in Lowville, the daughter of the late Charles Crane and Sadie Adele (Hall) Gordon. She graduated from Lowville Academy and received her teaching Degree from Oswego Normal School (SUNY Oswego) in 1939. Dorothy taught briefly in a one room school house in Lowville. On September 11, 1943 she married Lt. Doran E. Waugh in Columbus, Georgia. She and Doran purchased Harrisville Hardware Company on December 18, 1946 and operated Waugh’s Hardware until their retirement.  

Dorothy was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Adirondack Grange, Harrisville Senior Citizens and was a communicant of St. Francis Solanus in Harrisville and St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown. Dorothy loved spending time with her family at her camp on Lake Bonaparte, she enjoyed swimming, was a member of the Mapleview Bowling Team, loved Syracuse University Basketball, crossword puzzles and traveling to see her children and grandchildren.  Dorothy was known for her positive attitude toward life.

Dorothy is survived by a son, Edward G. Waugh of Spring Lake Heights, NJ; two daughters, Constance (Jerry) Roese of Forest Hill, MD and Patricia (Kenneth) Scott of Watertown; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Diane Waugh of Jackson, NJ, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by a daughter, Pamela (Lonnie) McCarter, her husband Doran, and by all of her siblings: Floyd, Charles, Kenneth, Raymond, Freddie and Winifred Gordon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville with Father Donald Manfred and Father Christopher Looby, concelebrating. Burial in St. Francis Solanus Cemetery will be held in the spring.

A graveside service for Dorothy will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 11:00 AM in St. Francis Solanus Cemetery, Harrisville, with the Rev. Christopher Looby, officiating.

Arrangements for Mrs. Dorothy Waugh are under the care of the Scanlon Funeral Home of Harrisville.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s honor may be made to Jefferson County Hospice, St. Frances Solanus Church (Harrisville, NY), St. Patrick’s Church (Watertown, NY), or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
