Doris M. (Mellnitz) Turck

Castorland, NY ~ Doris M. Turck, 79, of 8253 Van Amber Rd.  Castorland, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, February 26, 2013, at Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown with her loving family by her side.

Doris was born on May 2, 1933, in the Town of Croghan, NY, a daughter of Howard and Lydia Webster Mellnitz.

She was a 1951 graduate of Beaver River Central School, and continued her education at the Watertown School of Commerce, graduating in 1952.

On November 29, 1952, she married Allyn J. Turck in St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Fintan Murphy, OFM, officiating.  Mr. Turck died on May 5, 1991.

Doris was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, and had served as the director of the St. Stephen’s Fife and Drum Corp from 1971-1976.

Throughout her life, she had many interests that included working side by side with her husband on various projects. Her faith, music, gardening and spending time with her friends were also very important to her, but nothing took the place of family and making memories with her grandchildren.  She also loved to travel with her family.

Over the years, she worked at a variety of jobs including the telephone company, home healthcare and as a sales clerk.  She also had served as a volunteer and organized numerous events for her community and church. During her younger years, she enjoyed playing softball for the Town of New Bremen.

Surviving are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Elizabeth Turck of Castorland, Elaine (Jeff) McLear of Castorland, Mary Jane (Vern) Scoville of Carthage, and Renee (Jude) Kiah of Macomb, Il; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, four brothers, Newton Sr., Howard (Guy), Walter and Earl Mellnitz, and two sisters, Elizabeth Walseman and Naomi Hirschey.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, beginning with a 10:15 a.m. Prayer Service at the Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass from St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  Spring burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Bremen.

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
