Doris E. (Towne) Aucter-Mack

Mrs. Doris E. Aucter-Mack, 78 of Soft Maple Road, Croghan, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 8, 2019 while surrounded by her loving family.

Born October 21, 1940 in Carthage, the daughter of Floyd E. and Violet H. (Mealus) Towne. She enjoyed a happy childhood in Carthage and graduated from Carthage High School in 1959. Soon thereafter on July 11, 1959, Doris married John H. Aucter, whom predeceased her on October 22, 1981. Born of this marriage are two daughters, Rebecca Elaine and Deborah Ann. Doris again found love and married William L. Mack on September 5, 1987

Doris employed her talents in many ways, in the early years, she worked for Climax Manufacturing in Castorland and Beaverite in Croghan. Doris donated much time to the Croghan Fire Department Auxiliary helping those in need. She obtained her CNA certification in 1984 and cared for the elderly at the Greenbrier Nursing Home in Carthage and later at the Auburn Nursing Home in Auburn, NY. 

Doris was a music enthusiast, spending much time in her early life travelling around the North Country with John’s band, the Sodbusters. In recent years, she and William have attended many local bluegrass festivals and concerts. Doris loved shopping for shoes and purses, socializing with family and friends and telling stories. She also enjoyed cooking, as it was a labor of love for her friends and family. Her most treasured times in life were as a homemaker after her daughters were born and being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doris is survived by her husband, William L. Mack of Croghan; daughters, Rebecca E. Aucter and Deborah A. Aucter of Croghan; grandchildren, Franklyn (Erin) Monnat and Adam (Lynette) Monnat and four great-grandchildren, Hunter, BrookLyn, Jaxon and Hendrix Monnat; a sister, Rose Fowler of Natural Bridge as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her first husband, John and her parents, Floyd and Violet, she is predeceased by, brother Leon Towne; as well as in-laws, Henry and Hattie Aucter and Earl and Lucille Mack and several brother and sister in-laws.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the Scanlon Funeral Home in Croghan. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 11, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Scanlon Funeral Home. Burial in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, will be held in the spring.
