CROGHAN, NY ~ Donald G. Hodkinson, 95, of 9880 Main St. (NYS RT 812), died peacefully late Saturday evening, July 26, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family under their care and Lewis County Hospice.
Born on June 15, 1919 in Boonville, NY, a son of George and Dorothy Spencer Hodkinson, he was educated in Barnes Corners Country School and Lowville Free Academy.
He married Mary Martin on August 31, 1946 in Beaver Falls Evangelical United Brethren Parsonage, Beaver Falls. Mary died on March 28, 2009.
Don was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Prior to his marriage, he worked as a woodsman and for a basket factory in Lowville. After his marriage, he worked for Lehman & Zehr Lumber Company in Croghan until 1969, when he went to work for Beaverite Products, Inc., until his retirement in 1984. For many years, Don was also the grave digger and caretaker for Riverside and Riverside Annex cemeteries in Beaver Falls. Dad always said he never had a job that I didn’t like and I was glad to have one.
He was a member of Salem Christian Fellowship Church in Beaver Falls.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Green Valley Hunting Club.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John R. and Judy Hodkinson, of Croghan, and Chris D. and Joyce Hodkinson, of Beaver Falls; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lory L. and Bernard Lee, and JoAnn and Wayne Ferguson, all of Beaver Falls; ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Hodkinson, of Rodman; five sisters, Catherine Collins, of Orlando, FL, Gertrude McDonald, of Lowville, Margaret Chambers, of Inlet, and Elizabeth Turner and Monica Smith, both of Rodman, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Mary, of 62 years, he was predeceased by two brothers, Robert, who died in infancy, and Louis, who died in 2009, by a son, Frederick C., on July 1, 1950, and a great-grandson, Alec J. Sullivan, on August 6, 2007.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at the Salem Christian Fellowship Church, in Beaver Falls, with Pastor Bryan D. Catlin, and his son-in-law and Lay Leader, Wayne Ferguson, co-officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Annex Cemetery, Beaver Falls.
Calling hours will be on Friday, August 1, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan.
