CROGHAN, NY ~ Daniel E. Horvath, 81, of 6923 Texas Rd., Croghan, died Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, NY, where he had been admitted on June 9th.
Born October 7, 1935 in Lowville, NY, the son of George and Clara (Main) Horvath, he was educated at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.
He married Clare R. Bush on December 9, 1961 at St. Anthony’s Church in Indian River.
Following high school, Dan worked on the Gerald Lehman farm, and in 1955, entered the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Dix, NJ, from where he received an honorable discharge. Upon his return from the service, he went to work as a mechanic for Gerald Farney in Croghan. In 1962, he purchased the Farney Motor Company business where he sold used cars, snowmobiles and operated a repair shop. In 1982, his son Carlton became a partner and the business expanded by opening a Napa Auto Parts store where it continues to operate today under the ownership of his son in its same Main Street location. Additionally, during the 1980’s, he also owned and operated a dump truck business working primarily for various construction companies in the Croghan area until he retired in 1998.
Throughout his life, Dan enjoyed summers spent at his camp on Lake Bonaparte, spending winters in Florida, and loved working at the “Horvath Sugar Bush” which he established in 1985, and was an avid hunter.
He was a communicate of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, was a Life member of the Carthage Elk’s, a member of the Bald Mountain Hunting Club, an honorary member of the Beaver River Fish & Game Club, and was a former member of the Carthage American Legion and Poplar Hill Club in Natural Bridge.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 55 years, Clare, are his son and daughter-in-law, Carlton E. and Janet Horvath, and daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl A. and Kenneth Malbeuf, all of Croghan; three grandchildren, Ashlynne (Brett) Czepiel, of Boonville, Matthew Horvath, of Croghan, and Shaun Malbeuf, of Syracuse, and a great granddaughter, Aubree Czepiel, of Boonville.
Dan’s funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday (TODAY), from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
