LOWVILLE (NEW BREMEN), NY ~ Carolyn E. Buell, 76, of 8330 NYS Rt. 812, Lowville, died in the presence of her loving family on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where she had been admitted the previous day.

     Born on December 12, 1937, in Croghan, NY, a daughter and second oldest child of Leonard and Doris Schack Bush, she was a 1956 graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan.

     She married Franklin D. Buell on May 5, 1956 at St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Louis Hamm, officiating.

     Prior to her marriage, she was employed at VerSchneiders Drug Store (Wishey’s) in Croghan.  In addition to being a mother and homemaker to her large family, she and Frank owned and operated the Crystal View Hotel in New Bremen from 1969 until 1986.

     She was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, a charter member of the Croghan Firemen’s Auxiliary (1956 – 1969), and a member of New Bremen Fish & Game Club.

     Carolyn will be especially remembered as a great cook and avid bird watcher.  She also enjoyed doing puzzles, playing cards and bingo, and particularly spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

     Surviving besides  her husband of 57 years, Frank, are three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard J. and Marcie Buell, David J. and Cynthia Buell, and Jeffrey J. and Brenda Buell, all of New Bremen; two daughters and a son-in-law, Christina and Larry Hoch, of Belfort, and Teresa Buckingham of Lowville; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ronald and Beverly Bush, and James and Arlene Bush, all of Croghan, and Kenneth Bush, of New Bremen; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sally Bush, of Beaver Falls, and Cindy and Gene Czajkowski, of Verona; three sisters-in-law, Cindy Bush, of Croghan, Marie Buell, of Lowville, and Laura McLaughlin, of Moravia; two brothers-in-law, Blair Buell, of Lowville, and Leland Buell, of Clinton, and several nieces and nephews.

     In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Ronald James Buell (twin of Richard), who died in 1958 at the age of 5 months, a granddaughter, Erin Buckingham, who died August 24, 2013, a daughter-in-law, Vicky (Berrus) Buell, two sisters, Phyllis Hicks, Rita Bush, and a brother, Paul Bush, three brothers-in-law, Pat Clare, Brice and Robert Buell, two sisters-in-law, Linda and Arlene Buell, a nephew, Bobby Buell, and a niece, Dorothy Buell.

     Carolyn’s funeral services will be held on Monday, January 27th, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating.  Spring burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

     Calling hours will be on Sunday, January 26th, from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
     Memorial Contributions may be made to the Croghan V.F.D. Ambulance Fund or to a charity of one’s choice.
