CROGHAN, NY ~ Carole Ann (Kuhl) Widrick, 71, of 9935 NYS Rt. 812, Croghan, died peacefully in the comfort of her home on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, surrounded and under the care of her loving family and Lewis County Hospice.
Born March 1, 1941, in Watertown, NY, the daughter of Karl and Margaret Bockenheim Kuhl, she was a 1958 graduate of Beaver River Central School, and attended Mercy Hospital Nursing School in Watertown.
She married Virgil S. Widrick on December 12, 1959, in Croghan.
Carole worked as a contract driver for many years transporting Special Education children from outside districts to Beaver River Central. She also worked as a Playground and Kindergarten Aide at Beaver River Central for 27 years, retiring in 2004. Additionally, she enjoyed working at Wishey’s Ice Cream Shoppe and Schultz’s Fastidious Foods in Croghan for a number of years.
Extremely active within the Croghan and Lewis County community, she served as the chairman of the Red Cross Blood Mobile in Croghan for over 20 years, and worked as a volunteer in the Gift Shop at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.
She was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan, was a member of its Rosary Society, and was one of their Religious Education Instructors for many years. She was also a member of the Beaver River Memorial Post #1663 American Legion Post Auxiliary in Croghan.
Throughout her life, Carole was endeared for her engaging personality with everyone. Among her many interests, she liked gardening, reading and playing the piano. She especially enjoyed all of her time spent with her family and their activities.
Surviving besides her loving husband of 53 years, are six children, Bruce K. and wife, Patti Widrick, of Watertown, Brian K. and wife, Laura Widrick, and Kevin S. Widrick and his companion, Sharon Waligory, all of Lowville, Lynn M. and wife, Kathy Widrick, of Croghan, Brenda S. and husband, Lawrence Sportello, of Newport, NY, and Dean M. and wife, Kim Widrick, of Cary, NC; nine grandchildren, Brianna Ritz, David Widrick, Katie Widrick, Joshua Chisholm, Connor Chisholm, Ciera Sportello, Kristen Sportello, Matt Widrick and Trey Widrick; three step-grandchildren, Travis Bauter, Kevin Bauter and Jason Bauter; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bradley and Marge Kuhl, of Castorland and Melbourne, FL, and Wayne and Betty Kuhl, of Beaver Falls, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Lisa M. Chisholm, who died on December 1, 2009.
Carole’s funeral will be held on Monday, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, NY 13327, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stephen’s Church with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery, Croghan. A funeral luncheon will follow in the Social Hall at St. Stephen’s Church.
Calling hours will be from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
