Boyce Widrick Obituary

HOMER, NY/CARTHAGE, NY ~ Boyce S. Widrick, 89, of Homer, formerly of 35811 NYS Rt. 3, Carthage, died peacefully on Monday, April 22, 2013, at Cortland Regional Medical Ctr., Cortland, NY.

     Boyce was born July 3, 1923, in New Bremen, NY, a son of John J. and Luella Steiner Widrick, and was a graduate of the 1940 class of Beaver River High School.

     He married Jeane Virkler on November 25, 1943, in Lowville, NY.

     A dairy farmer for much of his life, he owned and operated the Rev. Andrew E. Virkler Farm on Rt. 812, Lowville, for many years. He also worked at Champion International Paper Company in Deferiet, and as a Watertown Daily Times newspaper carrier supervisor for a number of years before retiring.

     He had moved with his wife to Homer in September, 2011.

     Throughout his life he enjoyed many pastimes, and especially liked attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and school plays, and playing cards with his siblings.  He was also an avid NY Yankees, Syracuse University and Beaver River Central School sports fan.

     Surviving besides his loving wife of 69 years, of Cortland, are his children, Jeffrey J. Widrick and wife Shannon Knuth, of Arlington, MA, and Bethany J. and husband Timothy Herman, of Truxton, NY; four grandchildren, Eric Widrick, Lauren Widrick, Sean Herman and Benjamin Herman; three brothers, Gilbert S. Widrick and Virgil S. Widrick, both of Croghan, and Robert S. Widrick, of Lowville; two sisters, Rita S. Ebersol, of Rushville, NY, and Betty S. Nortz, of Lowville, and several nieces and nephews.

     He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn S. Farney, who died in 1978.

     Boyce’s funeral services will be held on Friday, April 26th, beginning with an 11:00 a.m. private family prayer service at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, followed by a 12 Noon Graveside Committal Service in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery, Croghan, that all family and friends are invited to attend, with the Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired, officiating.

     There will be no calling hours.

     Following the Graveside Committal Service, family and friends are invited to attend a post-funeral luncheon that will be held at the Apostolic Christian Church, NYS Rt. 812, Croghan (directly across from the cemetery).

     Memorial donations may be made to either the Beaver River All Sports Booster Club, P.O. Box 179, Beaver Falls, NY 13305, to the Elizabeth Brewster House, 41 South Main St., Homer, NY 13077, or to a charity of one’s choice.
