HARRISVILLE, NY ~ Barbara J. McIntosh, 87, formerly of Harrisville, died Friday morning December 5, 2014 at Country Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Carthage, with her girls at her side, where she had resided since 2008.
Barbara was born to the late Marion (Wood) and Abner Rice on January 14, 1927, in Edwards, NY, and was a 1944 graduate of Edwards High School.
She married Henry McIntosh on February 23, 1946 at St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville, where she and her husband resided and raised their seven children together. Mr. McIntosh died on December 23, 1996.
Following her graduation from high school and prior to her marriage, Barbara moved with her sister, Lois, to Syracuse, where they worked assisting passengers for the New York Central Railroad at the end of World War II.
She was a parishioner of St. Francis Solanus Church in Harrisville and St. James Church in Carthage. She was a former Harrisville PTO member.
Barbara enjoyed building and had made her own home's kitchen cabinets. She also was an avid reader and loved bowling, bingo, and activities at Country Manor. Included among her most special traits that she will be remembered for was the love she possessed of taking care of her husband and large family with all of her being. Her warm hugs, lovely smile and dancing eyes will be greatly missed. "We love you, Mama!"
She is survived by six children, Jack (Nancy) McIntosh, Jerry (Dora) McIntosh, Jill Carpenter, and Julie (Rick) Chartrand, all of Harrisville, and Jan (Kathy) McIntosh, of Barnes Comers, and Barbara Louviere, of Indian River; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren, and six sisters, Margaret McIntosh, of Palmyra, Lois Davis, Donna Soper, and Sharon Horne, all of Edwards, Frances Damon, of Adams, and Elizabeth Rose, of Harrisville.
In addition to her husband of 50 years, she was predeceased by her son, Joseph, and two brothers, Silas and Edwin Rice.
Barbara's funeral will be held on Tuesday December 9, 2014 beginning with a 9:45AM Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Harrisville, followed by a 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial from St. Francis Solanus Church, Harrisville, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Garrison Cemetery, Pitcairn.
Calling hours will be on Monday December 8, from 4-7 PM at the funeral home.
