HARRISVILLE, NY ~ One of the most difficult things to do is let go of a loved one. On July 6, 2018, Arlene Juanita Shaw, 84, of Torrance, CA and formerly of Harrisville, passed away peacefully in her sleep and went home to be with her creator at the home of her daughter in Torrance.
Born December 6, 1933 in the Town of Pitcairn, NY, a daughter of Clarence and Lavisa (LaVancha) Cleveland, she was educated in Harrisville schools.
Arlene’s first opportunity to learn her working skills was alongside her family on their farm in Pitcairn. Having been taught the value of a dollar, while in her teen years, she worked babysitting children and doing house cleaning. She later found her true love in the restaurant business and was given her first opportunity to prove her skills working in Jumbo’s Restaurant in Gouverneur, NY. She loved the restaurant atmosphere including being a part of people’s everyday lives with a personal goal to see how happy she could make each person’s dining experience. She traveled to New York City in 1958 where she continued to work in the restaurant business, and in 1960, moved to California where she had since resided. Her many memories which were reminisced often included the countless different and famous people she got to meet while working in various restaurant businesses in California, and was always thankful for what those life’s experiences had taught her and how they had enriched her. She died being very grateful for her final year in life.
Arlene was a member and very active in the Moose Lodge in El Segundo, CA. She loved to travel, took pleasure in gardening and cooking new recipes for family and friends.
She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Kathie and Harold Rahman, Torrance, CA; a very proud grandmother to three grandchildren, Shalimar, Chadwick and Amanda; three grandchildren-in-law, Jesse, Kayla and Aaron, and four great grandchildren, Hunter, Riker, Summer and Lincoln; two sisters, Leta Mantle, of Harrisville, and Carol Ryan, of Pitcairn; a sister-in-law, Esther Cleveland, of Hermon; two brothers-in-law, Floyd Layboult, of Richville, and Leland Ryan, of Pitcairn, and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles Lloyd Shaw, who died on January 11, 2007, and six brothers, Harold, Dale, Kenneth, Wesley, Lawrence and James Cleveland, and three sisters, Leta Ruth, Joyce Cleveland, and Irene Layboult.
Arlene’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, 14187 State St., Harrisville, NY 13648, with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, retired United Methodist Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Garrison Cemetery, Pitcairn.
