ROME, NY ~ Anna “Ann” J. Gordecki, 93, formerly of S. George St., Rome, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Masonic Care Community of New York in Utica where she had been a resident.

Anna was born on her family’s farm in West Leyden, NY on April 1, 1925, the youngest of seven children of William and Mary (Gacek) Szalkowski.  She was educated in West Leyden and Boonville schools and was a 1944 graduate of West Leyden Central School.  Following high school, she worked as an Operator for the Upstate Phone Company in Boonville.

After her marriage, she and her husband moved to Rome where she worked at the former Montgomery Ward Store.  In 1958, she became employed by the Rome Developmental Center where she worked for 25 years before retiring in 1983 as a Dining Room Attendant.

Anna was a longtime communicant of Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic Church in Rome and was a former member of the South Rome Senior Citizens and Rome Polish Home.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed traveling, working in her plentiful vegetable garden where she grew her famous horseradish, and spending time with her family and grandchildren to whom she was lovingly known as “Annie”, “Gram”, “Auntie” and “GG Annie”.

Anna is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Caroline M. and James E. Scanlon, of Rome; her five cherished granddaughters and spouses, Kristen L. Scanlon, of Boston, MA, Megan A. Scanlon, Syracuse, NY and Kelly L. and Jesse Tripp, Rolesville, NC; four great grandsons, Connor and Riley Tripp, of Rolesville, NC, and Dylan and Logan Mogel, of Lee Center, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, “Nick”, of almost 48 years, she was predeceased by two sisters, Agnes Johnson and Mary Baker, and four brothers, Michael, Stanley, John and Joseph Szalkowski, and her special niece, Christine Baker.
