Alice Noftsier Obituary

CASTORLAND, NY ~ Alice Jeanette Noftsier, 88, of Swiss Rd., Castorland, died peacefully while in the loving care of her family and Lewis County Hospice, on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Terry Blair, in Castorland.

Born September 21, 1928 in Staten Island, NY, a daughter of Robert and Isabele (Hayward) Heans, she was educated in Brooklyn and Manhattan schools. Throughout most of her childhood, Mrs. Noftsier lived in the Brooklyn and Manhattan areas of New York City.  As a young child during the 1930’s and 1940’s, she travelled as a Fresh Air Child each year during the summer to Croghan where she would stay with the Leon Zehr household on their family farm.

She married Romeyn V. Noftsier on August 11, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY.  After her marriage, she moved to the Swiss Road in the Town of Croghan where she and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm and raised their family.  Mrs. Noftsier was also an employee of Beaverite Products, Inc., Beaver Falls, and worked out of the Croghan plant for over 20 years before retiring as a Machine Operator in 1984.  Mr. Noftsier died on January 3, 1997.

Mrs. Noftsier was a member of the First Mennonite Church of New Bremen and a member of the Beaver River Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed many pastimes including watching television, cooking and entertaining her family and friends.  She was also an ardent traveler during her life, traveling throughout the country with family, especially enjoying trips to Disney World, and in later years, enjoying Senior Citizen trips.  Above all, she loved any time spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert R. “Chic” Noftsier, of Castorland, and Romeyn R. (Deborah) Noftsier, of Port Leyden, and her daughter, Roberta I. (Terry) Blair, of Castorland; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; her sister, Isabelle E. Smith, of Lowville, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband Romeyn, of over 50 years, she was predeceased by her sister, Roberta B. Bush, who died in 1986.

Mrs. Noftsier’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Mennonite Church of New Bremen with Ed Steckly, Pastor, officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
