CROGHAN, NY ~ Melvin Kipfer, 96, of 9918 State Rt. 812, Croghan, died Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown.

Born June 21, 1922 in Clarence, NY, a son of Amos A. and Rebecca Lichti Kipfer, he was educated in Clarence area schools.  He later in life received his GED from Beaver River Central School.

Following high school, he worked for the former Curtiss-Wright (Aircraft) Corporation in Buffalo before enlisting in the US Navy during WWII.  He was honorably discharged March 31, 1946.

He married Glenda M. Lehman on August 10, 1946 at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Beaver Falls, and together, he and his wife purchased and operated a farm on Swiss Road in Castorland for a couple of years before moving to a “fixer-upper” home in Naumburg that honed Mel’s carpentry and restoration skills.  He and his wife later purchased and refurbished another home on Shady Avenue in Croghan where they remained for many years before building a new home on the Old Indian River Road, where he and his family owned and operated a Christmas tree farm before eventually moving to their present Route 812 residence in 2014.

Earlier in his life, Mel was employed at Beaverite Products, Inc. in Beaver Falls for 5 years as a heat shield machine operator.  For most of his life, however, he worked as a self-employed carpenter erecting farms, building homes, for Perry Farney constructing feed bins, and in road construction fabricating forms for anything road construction-related before retiring in 1988.

Mel was a member of the Salem Christian Fellowship Church in Beaver Falls and also a member of its Board of Directors.  He was a lifetime member of the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, and held memberships in the Black River Valley Campers Club and Beaver River Senior Citizens.

His life’s most favorite pastime was traveling with his wife in their motor home to every state throughout the entire United States, including Alaska, Hawaiithe District of Columbia, throughout Europe and Australia for good measure.

Surviving are his loving wife, Glenda, of 72 years; his four children, Linda M. (Wendell) Kuhl, of Croghan, Stanley D. (Diane) Kipfer, of Telluride, CO, Dayle M Kipfer, of Glenfield, and Diane D. (Gary) Beller, of Carthage; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; his brother, Joseph Kipfer, of Alden, NY.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Nelson and Amos, and three sisters, Lorraine, Reta, Aurelia and Rebecca.

Mel’s funeral service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 11:00 am at Salem Christian Fellowship Church in Beaver Falls. Interment with military honors will be in Riverside Annex Cemetery, Beaver Falls in the spring.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 4:00pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the church.

I did not know Melvin but Lori & I purchased many Christmas trees from him over the years and we very much enjoyed his company as he would escort us around the tree farm. Fond memories for sure. A wonderfully kind person he was. My condolences to the family...
