CROGHAN, NY ~ Ellen D. Wallack, 76, of 9714 State Rt. 812, Croghan, died Friday, August 24, 2018, in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, NY.

Ellen was born May 27, 1942, in Lowville, NY, a daughter of former Assemblyman Benjamin H. and Elizabeth Keenan Demo, and graduated high school from Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan in 1960.  In 1964, she was graduated from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY, from where she received her B.S. Degree in Education.  She later did graduate work in teaching gifted and talented children at the University of Connecticut.

She married Pierre Wallack in August, 1964, at St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.  Although the marriage ended in divorce in 1984, they remained life-long friends. Pierre died March 5, 2015.

Between 1964 and 1972, Ellen worked as a stay-at-home mother and substitute school teacher.  In 1972, she began as a full time elementary school teacher at Beaver River Central School in Beaver Falls, retiring in 2001 after 20 years of service, which included 4th grade and the Gifted and Talented Program that left a positive impression on many of her students.

Throughout the years, Ellen enjoyed many hobbies and interests including reading, puzzles, gardening, decorative painting, and especially spending time with family and friends.  In recent years, she took great pleasure in volunteering with the Croghan Food Pantry.

Surviving are two sons, Eric P. Wallack and wife, Denise Smith, of Toledo, Ohio, and Matthew J. and Lori P. (McNeil) Wallack, of Lowville; a granddaughter, Madison Wallack, of Lowville; a sister, Elizabeth Lofink Demo, of Carthage; two sisters-in-law, Helen Fredenburg Demo, of Buffalo, and Mary Alice Demo, of Massena; 25 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and great nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Benjamin F., William, Rodney and Eugene Demo, and a sister, M. Patricia Bramhall Dustin.

Ellen’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, officiating.  Her interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.

Calling hours will also be on Thursday, August 30th, from 12 Noon until her 2:00 p.m. service.

Memorial donations may be made to either the Lewis County Humane Society, 6388 Pine Grove Rd., Glenfield, NY 13343, or to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 405, Croghan, NY 13327, to the Croghan Food Pantry, or to Lewis County Friends of Hospice.

She truly was "a positive impression on many of her students", including me. Two of the best memories I have of her include the time spent filming an old western movie and the countless hours creating the very first BRCS Elementary Yearbook. She was a wonderful woman and never forgot her students. May the memories you share comfort you.

I am so sorry that I will not be able to join in person tomorrow, but I did want to say that I loved Aunt Ellen so much, she was such a crazy and amazing woman! I always enjoyed tagging along when Nanny went to visit as well as the occasional calls we had when I was older and moved away. Please know that I will be thinking of you all tomorrow and will be there in spirit. All my love. - Kristin

You were a great teacher, and you made the 4th grade a great place to learn and grow. Thanks for all you taught me and my fellow students.
