NEW BREMEN, NY ~ Isabelle Edith Smith, 92, of NYS Rt. 812, Lowville, NY, died Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, after being stricken at home.

Born September 26, 1925 in Staten Island, NY, a daughter of Robert and Isabele (Hayward) Heans, she was educated in Brooklyn and Manhattan schools.

She married John W. Smith on November 27, 1944 in New Jersey. Mr. Smith died on April 27, 1987.

Prior to her marriage she worked for an insurance company in New York.  Following her marriage, she became a mother and homemaker for the rest of her life and moved permanently from Brooklyn to Castorland following her husband’s retirement in 1980. Prior to then, they frequently traveled to their summer home in Castorland which they owned at that time.

Throughout her life, she loved any time spent with her family, and immensely enjoyed visiting with family and friends in person or on the phone, liked doing puzzles, and most of all, took pleasure in traveling throughout the country with family, especially enjoying trips to Disney World.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Barbara Ann Smith, of New Bremen; twelve grandchildren, Bobby Smith, Amylyn Marley, Brian Smith, Cindy Rizza, Dennis Smith, Joseph Smith, Mary Beth Smith, Susanne Adamsky, Lauri-Ann Gerrafo, Melissa Gaudioso, Michelle Zehr and Leann Smith-Stewart; twenty-one great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, John, she was predeceased by three sons, Walter, Dennis and Michael Smith, and her two sisters, Roberta Bush and Alice Noftsier. 

Isabelle’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, NY 13327, with Ed Steckly, Pastor of the First Mennonite Church in New Bremen, officiating.  Burial next to her husband will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY on Friday, August 10th.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 7th, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
